Chapter 3 - THE COMPROMISED AUDIT

For the next three days, Emily threw herself entirely into her work, using spreadsheets and financial models as a shield against the tumult of her emotions.
She tried to convince herself that she didn't care. She was thirty-four, practically thirty-five. She didn't have time for billionaire drama, corporate conspiracies, or secret identities.
Yet, every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the warmth in Alex’s blue eyes when he looked at her across the dinner table.
On Thursday evening, while working late in her corner office, Emily’s computer screen flickered. A high-priority encrypted email appeared in her inbox. It was sent directly from the Executive Suite—from Alexander Cole-Vance.
Attached was a confidential dossier detailing the foreign transactions of Apex Capital.
Emily, the message read. I know you are angry with me, and you have every right to be. But you are the sharpest financial strategist in this building. I need someone I can trust completely. Look at pages 14 through 22. Someone inside your department has been clearing these fraudulent transfers for over a year.
Emily’s professional curiosity overruled her emotional caution. She opened the dossier and began reviewing the records.
As her eyes scanned the signatures on the wire transfers, her blood ran cold.
The employee code authorization didn't belong to a junior clerk or an external consultant. It belonged to David Harrison—Emily’s immediate supervisor and the Vice President of Financial Operations.
David had been her mentor for four years. He was the man who had promoted her to Senior Manager.
Before Emily could process the discovery, the shadow of a figure appeared in the glass doorway of her office.
"Working late, Emily?"
Emily looked up quickly, closing the file on her screen. David Harrison was standing in her doorway, holding a briefcase. His jacket was unbuttoned, and his necktie was slightly askew.
"David," Emily said, keeping her voice carefully neutral. "Yes... just finalizing the Q3 reports."
David walked slowly into her office, his eyes fixing on her computer monitor. "You know, Alexander Vance has turned this entire building upside down. Forensic auditors everywhere. IT monitoring all outgoing communications."
He stopped at the edge of her desk, leaning down slightly. "I saw an encrypted file transfer sent to your workstation ten minutes ago, Emily."
Emily’s heart began to hammer against her ribs. She subtly shifted her hand toward her phone resting on the desk. "It was just routine executive clearance protocols, David."
"Don't lie to me, Emily," David said, his voice dropping into a harsh, threatening whisper. He pulled a small black flash drive from his pocket and set it on her desk. "You're a smart girl. You built a nice life for yourself. Brookline condo, high salary, bright future. Don't ruin it all for a billionaire who doesn't even know your middle name."
"David... what did you do?" Emily asked softly.
"Richard Vance offered me five million dollars to route those funds," David hissed, his eyes wide with desperate greed. "Five million! Do you know how long I worked for this company without getting recognition? I deserved that money!"
He leaned closer, grabbing Emily’s arm with a tight, painful grip. "You’re going to delete that dossier. You’re going to tell Vance that the error was a software glitch. And if you don't... I’ll make sure the board thinks you were the one who authorized those transfers. My signature isn't on those paper files, Emily. Yours is. I used your employee credentials."
Emily gasped as realization washed over her. He had set her up to take the fall.
"Let go of her."
A cold, lethal voice echoed from the hallway.
David froze.
Alex walked into the office. Gone was the polite gentleman from the bistro; standing in the doorway was a man radiating pure, predatory power. Behind him stood two heavy-set corporate security guards.
"Alex," Emily breathed out, a wave of relief washing over her.
"David Harrison," Alex said calmly, walking into the room with slow, deliberate steps. "Your remote access privileges were revoked twenty minutes ago. We recorded every word of your conversation through Emily’s office intercom."
David’s face drained of color. He released Emily’s arm and backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Vance... listen to me... Richard forced me into this—"
"Save it for the FBI," Alex commanded quietly.
The security guards moved in quickly, restraining David and leading him out of the office in handcuffs.
Silence settled over the room. Emily stood by her desk, her hand trembling as she rubbed her wrist where David had grabbed her.
Alex immediately crossed the room, stopping inches away from her. "Did he hurt you?" his voice was rough with emotion as he gently reached out, his fingers lightly brushing over her wrist.
"I'm... I'm okay," Emily whispered, looking up into his storm-gray eyes. She could see genuine panic and fury in his gaze—not for his company, but for her.
"I’m so sorry, Emily," Alex said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I put you in danger. If anything had happened to you..."
"You came for me," Emily said quietly.
May you like
"I will always come for you," Alex replied fiercely. "I don't care about the money. I don't care about the board. I care about you."
Emily stared at him, the walls around her heart slowly beginning to crumble.
