Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The next morning, the smell of fresh coffee and bacon filled the quiet halls of the Chestnut Hill estate.
Emily woke up feeling surprisingly rested. She found a soft grey cashmere sweater and dark jeans laid out for her—courtesy of Alex’s executive assistant who had arranged for a high-end wardrobe delivery early that morning.
She walked down the grand winding staircase into the sunlit kitchen, where she found Alex standing at a marble island, wearing a simple black t-shirt and grey trousers. He was pouring coffee into two ceramic mugs.
"Good morning," he said, offering a warm, relaxed smile that lit up his eyes.
"Did the billionaire chairman actually cook breakfast?" Emily teased, walking over and taking a mug.
"I’ll have you know I make extraordinary scrambled eggs," Alex smiled, handing her a plate.
They ate together at the sunlit kitchen bar. For an hour, they avoided talking about corporate fraud, arson, or legal battles. Alex told her stories about growing up on the estate, his summer trips with his late mother, and his passion for botany that had originally inspired his fake "landscape architect" cover story.
"So you really do know about trees?" Emily asked, grinning over her coffee.
"I can identify forty species of oak by their bark alone," Alex boasted proudly.
"Impressive," Emily laughed. "Though I still think your Swiss watch gave you away."
Their cheerful moment was interrupted by the heavy footsteps of Marcus, Alex’s head of security. Marcus walked into the kitchen, his face grim.
"Mr. Vance. The FBI located Richard’s vehicle abandoned near the docks in South Boston. They believe he’s attempting to flee the country via a private yacht owned by his offshore associate, Victor Markov."
Alex’s smile vanished instantly. His posture straightened, returning to the formidable leader. "Markov... the Russian logistics tycoon?"
"Yes, sir," Marcus nodded. "Interpol has had Markov under surveillance for money laundering. If Richard steps onto that vessel in international waters, we’ll never extradite him."
Alex slammed his hand onto the marble counter. "Where is the yacht currently docked?"
"Pier 4, Black Falcon Terminal. They are schedule to depart at midnight tonight."
Alex looked toward Emily, concern clouding his eyes. "Emily, stay here with Marcus’s team—"
"No," Emily interrupted firmly, setting her coffee mug down.
Alex blinked. "No?"
"Richard burned down my building’s lobby, framed me for financial fraud, and tried to destroy my career," Emily said, her voice dropping into a hard, unwavering register. "I’m not sitting in a golden cage while you settle this. Victor Markov’s holding companies use the exact same offshore routing codes I spent three days analyzing. You need someone who can read their financial manifests on the spot."
Alex stared at her, astonished by her fierceness.
"It’s too dangerous, Emily," Alex argued softly.
"I managed sixty-billion-dollar portfolios at Cole Meridian, Alex," Emily said, stepping right up to him and looking directly into his eyes. "I don't break easily. We finish this together."

Alex looked down at her, a slow, proud smile dawning across his face. "God, you are incredible."
He turned to Marcus. "Prepare the tactical team. We’re going to Pier 4."
