Chapter 6 - The Cage of Mirrors

The interrogation room smelled of industrial floor stripper and stale coffee. A single fluorescent tube buzzed overhead, casting a sickly pallor over Vanessa’s face. Stripped of her designer blazer, her French manicure chipped, and wearing an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit, my glamorous sister looked like a hollow caricature of herself.

When the heavy steel door clicked shut behind me, Vanessa didn't lower her head in shame. She glared at me, her eyes bloodshot, venom still dripping from every pore.

"Are you happy now, Kallie?" she hissed, leaning over the laminate table, her handcuffed wrists clinking against the metal ring in the center. "You had me dragged out like a criminal in front of the neighbors. You destroyed my life!"

I pulled out the metal chair across from her and sat down slowly. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't show anger. The rage inside me had crystallized into something far more dangerous: total detachment.

"You slapped my child, Vanessa," I said evenly. "You forged signatures to steal three million dollars from our grandmother's trust. And you kept medical documents to sell my son to corporate wolves. You destroyed yourself."

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You always thought you were better than me. The smart one. The dutiful one. Grandmother left you the trust because she knew I’d spend it! But you don't know anything, Kallie. You live in your pathetic little design studio, playing the saintly single mother, completely blind to how the world actually works."

I leaned forward, sliding the printout of the forged termination email across the metal surface.

Vanessa’s laughter died instantly. Her eyes scanned the text, and for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine terror crossed her features.

"Mother gave you the password, didn't she?" I asked.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry. "She... she said it was for the family's protection. She said Julian Sterling’s father was threatening to destroy Dad's firm if you had that baby. We were trying to survive!"

"Stop lying!" I slammed my open palm on the table. The sharp crack echoed against the concrete walls, making Vanessa jump. "You didn't do it to protect anyone! You did it because you found out that Julian’s trust had a survival clause. You waited until Noah turned three because under the Sterling family charter, an acknowledged heir must be presented before his fourth birthday for the primary beneficiary to claim the portfolio!"

Vanessa’s breathing turned shallow. "How do you know that?"

"Because Eleanor Vance is ten times smarter than the gutter-tier lawyers you hire," I replied coldly. "Now tell me: who is the broker? Who paid you the down payment?"

Vanessa’s lips trembled. She looked toward the two-way mirror, as if she expected someone to burst through the glass. "I can't say his name. Kallie, you don't understand... these aren't just corporate suits. They’re the fixers who clean up for Julian’s uncle, Marcus Sterling. Marcus has been running the board while Julian stayed in exile. If Julian finds out Noah exists, Marcus loses everything. He told me... he said if I backed out or went to Julian directly, Noah wouldn't live to see his fourth birthday."

A cold blade sliced through my chest.

"What did you say?"

"Marcus doesn't want Noah as an heir," Vanessa whispered, tears of real panic finally spilling down her cheeks. "He wanted the original birth certificate to forge an adoption abroad, to make the boy disappear legally so Julian could never prove a living successor! That’s why I panicked tonight! The deadline is noon today! If I don't deliver the papers by noon, Marcus’s people said they’d come take Noah themselves!"

I stood up so violently the chair screeched across the concrete.

"Eleanor!" I shouted toward the door.

The lock clicked, and Eleanor stepped into the room, her phone already pressed to her ear. Her expression was grim, her skin ashen.

"Kallie," Eleanor said before I could speak. "We have a problem."

"What happened?"

"Daniel just called from your house," Eleanor whispered, her voice tight with suppressed alarm. "A convoy of black Suburbans just pulled up outside your gate. But they aren't Marcus Sterling's men."

"Then who are they?"

May you like

"Julian Sterling," Eleanor said. "He just landed at Dallas Love Field in his private jet. And he’s standing on your front lawn demanding his son."
