Chapter 22 - The Reckoning

Before Marcus’s operatives could raise their weapons, the entire subterranean chamber was plunged into total darkness.

Daniel had severed the building’s primary power grid from the control room above.

A split second later, the sharp, deafening *crack* of flashbang grenades detonated near the perimeter pillars. Blinding white light and concussive shockwaves tore through the chamber. Marcus’s guards shouted in disarray, blinded by the sudden blast.

"Down!" Julian roared, tackling me and Noah to the floor, covering our bodies with his own as gunfire erupted in the darkness.

Muzzle flashes strobed like lightning across the subterranean ceiling. Daniel and a tactical squad of federal marshals—having breached the emergency access shafts—swept into the chamber with night-vision scopes, neutralizing the mercenary team before they could establish a firing line.

"Noah! Stay down, baby!" I whispered, wrapping my arms around my son, my face pressed into his hair.

Through the chaos, I saw a shadow dart toward the vault door.

It was Marcus.

Realizing his empire was crumbling around him, Marcus was lunging toward the biometric console, desperate to trigger the vault override manually or seize Noah as a human shield.

"Julian!" I screamed.

Julian spun around. With the explosive fury of a father defending his child, he launched himself across the concrete, intercepting Marcus five feet from the vault console.

The two men collided with brutal force, crashing against the titanium steel door. Marcus swung a wild, desperate punch that caught Julian across the cheek, cutting the skin. But Julian didn't flinch. He seized Marcus by the lapels, drove his knee into his gut, and slammed him face-first against the cold, unyielding metal of the vault.

"This is for Noah," Julian snarled, his voice trembling with years of suppressed rage. He wrenched Marcus’s arm behind his back, forcing him down to his knees. "And this is for every lie you ever told."

The emergency floodlights flickered back on, bathing the vault in stark white illumination.

Marcus knelt on the floor, gasping for air, pinned under Julian's iron grip. Blood dripped from Marcus’s split lip onto his pristine white shirt. The four mercenary guards were already disarmed, face-down on the concrete with marshals cuffing their wrists.

Federal Marshal Vance stepped into the light, his badge gleaming under the halogen lamps, his weapon aimed squarely at Marcus Sterling.

"Marcus Sterling," the marshal announced in a booming voice. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, kidnapping, and high federal treason. You have the right to remain silent."

Marcus looked up, his eyes wild with defeated hatred, spitting blood onto the floor. He glared at Victoria, then at Julian, and finally at Noah, who was standing safely between my legs, clutching my hand with all his might.

"You think this is over?" Marcus hissed, a deranged smirk spreading across his battered lips. "You think you won, grandmother? You have no idea what you unlocked when you brought that boy into the light."

May you like

Victoria walked forward, her cane tapping rhythmically against the stone. She stopped inches from Marcus, looking down at him with utter disgust.

"Take him away," Victoria said coldly. "He is no longer a Sterling."
