Chapter 20 - The Fortress of Manhattan

The Manhattan Central Depository stood like an impenetrable grey monolith among the towering glass skyscrapers of the Financial District. Built from reinforced granite and armor-plated steel, it had stood for over a century as the ultimate subterranean sanctuary for the city's elite fortunes.
Rain lashed against the armored windows of our black SUV as Daniel parked across the avenue. It was 9:45 AM. The street was bustling with yellow cabs and umbrellas, oblivious to the high-stakes confrontation brewing fifty feet below the pavement.
"Federal marshals are in position two blocks south," Eleanor reported, monitoring a secure channel on her encrypted phone. "The moment we confirm Vanessa is alive and on-site, Judge Morrison will sign the emergency seizure order."
"The marshals are too slow," Victoria said, adjusting the collar of her black overcoat. "Once we enter the subterranean chamber, we will be on our own until Daniel overrides the local security relays."
I looked down at Noah. I had dressed him in a warm woolen sweater and heavy boots. He looked up at me with his wide, innocent eyes, sensing the tension in the air.
"Mommy," he whispered, tugging at my sleeve. "Are we going to see Aunt Vanessa?"
My throat tightened. "Yes, sweetie. But you have to stay right beside Mommy and Julian. No matter what happens, you don't let go of Julian's hand. Do you understand?"
"I promise," Noah said earnestly, nodding his little head.
Julian knelt down in front of Noah, pulling him into a tight embrace. "You are the bravest boy I know, Noah. Today, we protect our family. Together."
Daniel checked his wristwatch. "Nine fifty-five. Time to move."
We stepped out into the biting morning rain. Victoria led the way, her silver serpent cane striking the wet granite steps with steady, resonant thuds. Julian held Noah firmly by the hand on his right, while his left hand remained tucked inside his tailored overcoat, inches from his concealed sidearm. I walked directly beside Noah, shielding his small frame with my body.
The heavy bronze doors of the Depository slid open with a deep mechanical groan.
Inside, the grand lobby was unnervingly empty. The tellers' windows were shuttered behind reinforced bulletproof steel. Standing near the private elevator bank was a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit—Marcus Sterling’s chief of private security.
"Madam Sterling," the man said, bowing with mocking courtesy. "Mr. Marcus Sterling awaits your arrival in Vault Sub-Level 4. Only the family may enter."
He gestured toward Eleanor and Daniel. "The legal counsel and the bodyguard remain in the lobby."
"They stay within visual range of the monitoring room," Julian countered fiercely. "Or this meeting ends before it begins."
May you like
The guard smiled thinly, tapping his earpiece. "Mr. Marcus has agreed. But remember: your sister's survival depends on your compliance."
The heavy elevator doors slid shut, sealing Victoria, Julian, Noah, and me into the steel capsule as it began its long, silent descent into the depths of the earth.
