Chapter 14 - The Matriarch’s Return

The silence inside the safehouse was suffocating, broken only by the low hum of the security monitors. Noah was asleep in the adjoining bedroom, his small chest rising and falling beneath a fleece blanket, completely oblivious to the specter standing at our gates.

Julian’s knuckles were bone-white where he gripped the edge of the mahogany counter. "She was buried," he whispered, staring at the screen as if looking at a ghost risen from the grave. "Five years ago, in the family mausoleum at Westchester. Marcus produced the death certificate, the coroner’s report, the signed cremation authorization. We held a public memorial with three hundred dignitaries."

"Then who is standing at our front gate?" Eleanor asked, her legal pad already open, her sharp eyes scanning every pixel of the video feed. "Because that woman possesses authentic diplomatic credentials and a document that bears the original 1898 Sterling wax seal."

"It’s her," Julian said, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and reverence. "Nobody else walks with that posture. Nobody else carries the silver serpent cane. It belonged to my great-grandfather."

"Do we open the gate?" Daniel asked, his hand hovering over the electronic override switch. His tactical sidearm was already unholstered and resting beside the console. "We have fortified perimeter defenses, Julian. If Marcus sent a lookalike or a trap, opening those gates surrenders our tactical advantage."

I stepped forward, looking Julian dead in the eye. "She mentioned Noah. She said Julian brought a curse upon his head. How does a woman who has been 'dead' for five years even know my son exists?"

"There is only one way to find out," Julian replied quietly. He looked at Daniel. "Let her in. But tell the perimeter guards to keep their rifles trained on the escort. If either of those men in the military suits reaches into their coat, drop them."

Daniel nodded grimly and depressed the intercom button. "Gates are unlocking, Madam Sterling. Walk through the inner courtyard alone. Your escort stays by the vehicle."

On the monitor, Victoria Sterling did not flinch. She gave a single, imperious nod, tapped her cane against the cobblestones, and stepped forward as the heavy iron gates groaned open. Her two bodyguards remained rooted beside the Rolls-Royce, their expressions carved from stone.

Minutes later, the front door of the safehouse swung open. A chill draft swept into the foyer, bringing with it the scent of cold rain, lavender, and ancient cedar.

Victoria Sterling crossed the threshold. Up close, her age was visible in the spiderweb lines around her eyes, but her gaze was sharper than a surgeon's blade. Her silver hair was pinned in an intricate French twist, and around her neck hung a pendant of polished onyx. She paused, surveying the room—the security equipment, Eleanor's documents, Julian's drawn face, and finally, me.

"You have your mother’s stubborn chin, Julian," she said, her voice smooth, low, and terrifyingly steady. "And you, Kallie. You look remarkably composed for a mother whose child was nearly traded away for a real estate conglomerate."

"Who are you?" I demanded, refusing to bow to the aristocratic aura that filled the room. "And why are you speaking about my son?"

Victoria tapped her silver-tipped cane against the hardwood floor. A sharp *clack* echoed through the room. "I am the woman who built the empire Marcus is currently burning to the ground. And your son, Kallie, is the only living soul who can stop him from turning this bloodline into ashes."
