Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

The heavy mahogany door swung half-shut behind me, catching the chill of the evening breeze as Robert’s words hung in the suffocating silence of the foyer. The grandfather clock in the corner ticked with brutal precision, each mechanical strike driving the cold reality deeper into my bones.

"Say that again," I whispered, my voice deceptively calm, though my fingers dug so hard into the leather of my handbag that the stitching groaned. "Who is coming to Dallas?"

Robert shrank back against the floral wallpaper of the corridor. Without the haughty swagger he had worn during dinner, he looked completely shriveled—a petty patriarch whose kingdom of borrowed money and hollow prestige was collapsing in real time. Beside me, Eleanor Vance remained perfectly still, her sharp eyes cataloging every twitch of my father’s trembling jaw. Daniel stepped up slightly, his broad frame creating a protective barrier between Robert and me.

"Tell her, Robert," Eleanor said, her voice like cracking ice. "And remember, anything you withhold regarding an ongoing extortion plot makes you an active accessory before the court."

Robert wiped sweat from his upper lip with the cuff of his linen shirt. "Four years ago... before Noah was born. You remember that month you spent in Austin after your scholarship project? You thought it was an anonymous benefactor who helped you into that exclusive medical pavilion when complications arose during your pregnancy."

My breath hitched. "Dr. Harrison’s clinic."

"It wasn’t anonymous," Robert admitted, looking down at his polished shoes in shame. "Vanessa found out first. She found the correspondence in your old apartment when you asked her to pack your things. You told us you met someone during that charity gala in Houston, someone whose name you swore you’d never reveal because you thought he’d abandoned you. But Vanessa dug. She always had friends in high-end social circles, people who traded in gossip."

My chest felt as though a steel band was tightening around it. Four years ago, I had loved someone with an intensity that terrified me. A man named Julian Sterling. He hadn't been a monster—at least, not in the brief, beautiful months we shared before his world of billionaire family dynasties and cutthroat corporate wars came crashing into ours. One morning, he had vanished from my life, leaving only an unsigned letter claiming our relationship was an error and that a settlement had been wired to my account. I had returned the money, changed my number, and poured every drop of my soul into raising my unborn son alone.

"Vanessa knew it was Julian," Robert muttered. "She kept the medical files, the DNA markers from the clinic's prenatal screening, everything. She hid them in a safety deposit box for three years, waiting for the right moment to cash in."

"She blackmailed him?" Daniel asked, his tone lethal.

"Not him directly! She was too terrified of the Sterling legal empire," Robert cried out defensively. "She reached out to a private broker—someone who works for Julian’s estranged family branch. The Sterling Group has been embroiled in an inheritance war. If Julian had a verified male heir, his family’s board of trustees would automatically release the master trust to his sole control. The rival faction wanted those papers buried or sold to them so they could control the boy."

The blood in my veins turned to liquid fire. My own sister hadn't just slapped my three-year-old child over a spilled dessert tonight. She had spent the last three years treating Noah like a bearer bond, waiting to auction his very existence to the highest bidder in a corporate bloodbath.

"Where are those documents now?" I demanded, stepping toward my father until he was forced to press his spine against the wall.

"The man came three days ago," Robert stammered. "He gave Vanessa a down payment, but he wanted original hospital signatures. That’s why she needed access to the trust account—she needed liquid collateral to hire an underground archivist to forge the remaining medical releases. When you cut off the allowance tonight, she panicked. That's why she lost her mind at dinner! She was facing execution from those people!"

"She's facing prison," I said, cold fury radiating from every syllable. "And if you ever come near Noah, or if you speak his name to Julian Sterling or anyone else, I will ensure the district attorney adds conspiracy to kidnap to your charges."

I turned on my heel and walked out into the Texas night. The flashing lights of the cruisers were gone, replaced by the deep hum of distant highway traffic.

"Daniel," I said as we reached my car.

"I'm already on it, Kallie," Daniel replied, pulling out his phone. "I’m putting a round-the-clock private security detail at your townhouse. Nobody gets within fifty yards of Noah."

May you like

"And Eleanor," I looked at the formidable attorney. "Find out everything you can about the Sterling Group’s recent movements in Dallas. If Julian Sterling is in this city, I need to know before he takes his first breath tomorrow morning."
