Chapter 15 - The Blood Clause

Eleanor stepped forward, stepping directly into Victoria’s line of sight. "Madam Sterling, legally speaking, you do not exist. Your estate was probated thirty-six months ago. Marcus Sterling holds executive power of attorney over all trust assets. If you are alive, this entire board restructuring is null and void."

"Marcus believes I am dead because I allowed him to believe it," Victoria replied coldly, taking a seat on the leather armchair as though she owned the safehouse. She set her silver cane across her knees and laid the yellowed parchment upon the coffee table. "Five years ago, Marcus poisoned my evening tea with a synthetic neurotoxin. He wanted a sudden heart failure. What he didn't realize was that my personal physician had served my father in Berlin. We staged my decline, faked the cardiac arrest, and spirited me out of the country before Marcus could request an autopsy."

Julian sank onto the sofa opposite her, visibly shaken. "You let me mourn you. You let me spend five years believing I was alone against him."

"If you knew I was alive, Julian, your eyes would have betrayed you," Victoria said without an ounce of remorse. "Marcus is a predator. He smells fear, but more importantly, he smells hope. For you to survive, you had to believe you were utterly defeated."

"And Noah?" I interrupted, my maternal rage boiling over the polished veneer of their aristocratic drama. "Why did you bring my three-year-old child into this? Marcus tried to abduct him! My own sister slapped him across the face at Sunday dinner just to create a distraction so Marcus's men could clone my keycard!"

Victoria’s gaze softened by a fraction of an inch—not with warmth, but with a predatory recognition of strength. "Your sister Vanessa was blackmailed, Kallie. Marcus held three million dollars of her husband's gambling debts over her head. She was a coward, yes, but she was merely a pawn."

Victoria tapped the parchment on the table. The crimson wax seal depicted a two-headed eagle clutching an anchor.

"This is the founding charter of the Sterling Dynasty Trust, drafted in 1898," Victoria said. "It contains an irrevocable primogeniture safeguard known as the Blood Clause. Marcus spent the last four years attempting to dissolve the trust through offshore shell corporations. But under the charter's strict provisions, the entire empire—the land holdings, the shipping lanes, the private equity reserves—cannot be liquidated or transferred unless approved by the direct, legitimate heir of the elder branch."

Julian frowned. "I am the elder branch. And Marcus forged my relinquishment papers."

"You are the elder branch, Julian, but Marcus inserted an addendum declaring you incapacitated due to psychological distress," Victoria countered. "However, the charter anticipated treachery. It states that if the direct heir is deemed unfit or deceased, the mantle passes instantly to his firstborn male child upon biological confirmation."

The air left my lungs. I looked toward the closed bedroom door where Noah slept with his favorite stuffed bear. "Noah."

"Marcus didn't want to kidnap Noah to ransom him," Victoria said, her eyes narrowing to twin slits of obsidian. "Marcus wanted to legally adopt him, establish guardianship over the undisputed heir, and then—once the boy turned four and the charter locked the trust—ensure that Noah met with a tragic, unpreventable household accident."

A sickening chill gripped my heart. Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back, his face white with fury. "Over my dead body."

"Precisely," Victoria said calmly. "Which is why Marcus planned to kill you both on the same afternoon."
