Chapter 5 - The Stolen Keycard

By the time my town car pulled up to the glass-and-steel facade of my downtown residence, two Chicago police squad cars were parked diagonally with their red and blue strobe lights flashing against the wet pavement.

A crowd of neighbors and pedestrians had formed a semi-circle along the sidewalk, whispering and filming with their smartphones. In the center of the lobby, surrounded by two uniformed officers and the head of private building security, stood my mother, Eleanor, wrapped in her designer trench coat, her face flushed with blotchy red fury. Flanking her was my aunt Beatrice, waving a rolled-up copy of Brandon's revoked car contract like a weapon.

"She is my daughter!" Eleanor was shrieking, her voice bouncing shrilly off the terrazzo tiles. "Everything in that penthouse was bought while she was living under my umbrella of maternal guidance! She stole her brother's engagement present right out from under him! Tell these security guards to back away from me!"

I stepped through the revolving glass doors. The click of my heels against the lobby floor cut through the shouting.

The entire lobby went dead silent. Eleanor turned, her eyes widening with predatory relief.

"Claire!" Eleanor lunged forward, but the senior police officer immediately stepped into her path, his hand resting calmly against his duty belt. "Tell them to let us up! Brandon is sitting at home weeping! Chloe’s parents are threatening to call off the entire engagement party because you humiliated him! You are going to sign that co-borrower re-authorization form this instant, Claire, or I swear to God I will disown you before the week is out!"

"Officer," I said, completely ignoring my mother as I pulled out my state ID and my residential deed documentation on my tablet. "I am Claire Henderson. I am the sole owner of Unit 2204. These individuals do not reside here, they are not on the guest registry, and they have no legal right to enter this private building."

"She forged her own mother's signature!" Aunt Beatrice piped up, her voice shrill. "She’s a cold-hearted narcissist! She took twenty thousand dollars from her brother's future!"

"Officer," I continued, voice steady as steel, "that woman attempted to commit eighty-eight thousand dollars worth of credit and auto fraud using my identity yesterday afternoon at Lake Forest. The Lake Forest Police Department already holds incident report number 8821. Furthermore, if they do not leave this private property within sixty seconds, I want formal trespass citations issued, followed by an immediate application for a permanent restraining order."

The officer turned to Eleanor. "Ma'am, you heard the property owner. You have one warning. Turn around and walk out the front doors, or you spend the night in Cook County lockup."

Eleanor stared at me, trembling with humiliation. She had always controlled me through manufactured family guilt, crying in front of relatives until I caved and handed over my savings. But looking into my eyes now, she saw nothing. No guilt, no flinching, no yielding.

"You will burn in hell for this, Claire," she hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper as the officers escorted her toward the street. "You think you’re untouchable? Your father isn't done with you yet."
