Chapter 19 - The Corporate Coup

At 2:00 PM, the executive boardroom on the 64th floor of Kensington Tower was packed with twenty-four board members, senior legal partners, and media consultants. Outside the double mahogany doors, television news crews were broadcasting live updates on the federal investigation.
Arthur Kensington sat at the head of the table, his federal ankle monitor hidden beneath his tailored pinstripe trousers, but his presence was as commanding as a sovereign king. I sat directly to his right, my laptop open and my documents arranged with surgical neatness.
At the far end of the table sat Donald Blackwell, the vice-chairman of the board and the managing director representing the Vanguard Crest private equity group.
"Arthur, with all due respect to your legacy," Blackwell began, his tone dripping with patronizing sympathy, "the federal indictments, the arrest of your former COO, and the alleged involvement of Miss Henderson’s family have compromised this firm beyond recovery. The stock dropped fourteen percent at opening bell. We have drafted a resolution demanding your immediate resignation as Chairman and Claire Henderson's termination without severance."
A murmur of agreement rippled through several compromised board members.
"Is that your final proposal, Donald?" Arthur asked smoothly, not blinking.
"It is the only proposal that saves this firm from bankruptcy, Arthur. Step down, surrender your voting proxies to Vanguard Crest, and let us clean up the wreckage."
I tapped my fingers once on the desk, then hit the projector remote.
The eighty-inch boardroom display flared to life, projecting the Swiss wire authorization recovered from Eleanor's safe deposit box.
Blackwell’s face froze. The patronizing smirk vanished in a split second.
"Donald," I said, my voice echoing across the silent boardroom, "perhaps you can explain why your private equity vehicle, Vanguard Crest, transferred four million dollars to Marcus Sterling’s shell entity fourteen days ago?"
The room went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the HVAC system sixty floors above the city.
"That... that is an internal operational matter unrelated to this proceeding," Blackwell stammered, his fingers gripping his leather portfolio.
"It is entirely related," I replied, standing up and sliding a second document onto the center of the table. "Because Agent Miller and the Financial Crimes Division have just matched the IP address that initiated the offshore transfer directly to the secure terminal inside your personal office down the hall."
Two uniformed federal agents, accompanied by Agent Miller, pushed the double doors open and entered the boardroom.
"Donald Blackwell," Miller declared, holding an arrest warrant high. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, market manipulation, and corporate espionage. Step away from the table."
Blackwell looked around the room, pleading with his allies, but not a single board member met his gaze. They looked down at their polished wood tables, terrified of being linked to the sinking ship.
As the handcuffs were locked around Blackwell’s wrists and he was escorted past the floor-to-ceiling windows, Arthur Kensington turned to the remaining board members.

"Now then," Arthur said with a razor-thin smile, "are there any other resolutions we need to discuss regarding Miss Henderson’s position?"
No one dared to breathe.
