Chapter 12 - The True Beneficiary

David stepped forward and slapped four heavy blue-backed legal folios onto the center of the table.

"Eleanor Henderson, Richard Henderson, and Brandon Henderson," David announced formally. "You are hereby served with a federal civil summons for racketeering, bank fraud, wire fraud, and grand identity theft, filed by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois."

Brandon jumped up, knocking his water glass over. "What the hell is this?!"

"Read paragraph fourteen, Brandon," Sarah Lin spoke up, her voice cutting through the panic like a scalpel. "Three days ago, your former fiancée, Chloe Evans, voluntarily approached our legal team. She didn't just give us a statement. She gave us the hard drive you left in her apartment."

Brandon’s face turned from pale to an ashen, ghost-like gray. He grabbed the edge of the table, his knees visibly buckling.

"The hard drive contains five years of forged financial records," Sarah continued mercilessly. "Brandon wasn't just losing money in crypto. He was running an unlicensed shadow investment pool, taking money from elderly members of your country club, laundering it through your father’s architectural firm, and using Claire’s identity to open merchant lines of credit to pay off early investors. It was a textbook Ponzi scheme."

Eleanor turned to Brandon, horror dawning in her eyes. "Brandon... what is she talking about? You said that money was from your consulting business!"

"He lied to you, Eleanor," I said quietly, looking directly at my mother. "Just like you lied to yourself. You spent twenty years protecting this boy, treating him like an untouchable prince while treating me like an unpaid servant whose only purpose was to fund his illusions. You sacrificed my sanity, my credit, and my safety to protect a criminal."

Richard buried his face in his trembling hands, a broken sob tearing from his throat. "We’re going to prison. Dear God, we’re all going to prison."

"Chloe has already signed a cooperating witness agreement with the Department of Justice," I added, stepping closer to the table. "Arthur Kensington and I are handing over the complete audit trail tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM."

Eleanor looked up at me, trembling from head to toe, her voice reduced to a broken whimper. "Claire... please. You’re my daughter. You can stop this. Tell them it was a family misunderstanding. We’ll give you everything back. Just don't destroy your brother."

"He destroyed himself, Eleanor," I said coldly. "And you handed him the shovel."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the room, leaving the broken wreckage of my former family drowning in their own deceit.
