Chapter 15 - The Mastermind’s Shadow

Within forty minutes, Vance had arranged an encrypted video link to Arthur Kensington’s private residence in Lake Forest. When the screen flickered to life, the seventy-two-year-old billionaire was sitting in his leather wingback chair, wearing a cashmere sweater, looking neither defeated nor fearful. Behind him, two federal marshals stood stationed at the French doors.
"Claire," Arthur’s deep voice resonated through the speakers. "I hear your brother has attempted a final, clumsy suicide vest maneuver."
"He presented six-year-old shell documents naming you as the shadow funder and me as the director, Arthur," I said, leaning toward the camera. "Did you ever do business with a holding entity called 'Blue Meridian Holdings'?"
Arthur didn't even hesitate. "Never. But my disgraced former chief operating officer, Marcus Sterling, did. Sterling was terminated five years ago when I caught him skimming vendor kickbacks. And if my memory serves me well, Sterling's personal accountant was a man named Gregory Henderson—your father’s first cousin."
The puzzle pieces fell into place with a sickening thud. This was never just Brandon acting out of spoiled desperation. When I revoked the black credit card, repossessed the sports car, and froze my parents' trust disbursements, I hadn't just pinched Brandon’s lifestyle—I had triggered the collapse of a ten-year financial scam run by the extended Henderson family, feeding off stolen identities and forged corporate seals.
"Brandon didn't draft that proffer agreement," Vance stammered, adjusting his glasses. "He doesn't have the legal vocabulary. Someone fed him the script inside the facility."
"Sterling visited the detention center yesterday under a legal assistant badge," Miller said, reading from a tablet that had just buzzed in his pocket. "He used a falsified bar card. He promised Brandon full immunity if he turned state's evidence against Claire and Arthur."
I looked at the federal agent. "Brandon thinks he’s cutting a deal to walk free by Christmas. In reality, Sterling is using him to destroy Kensington Global so Sterling's offshore consortium can launch a hostile takeover at penny-stock valuations."
Arthur let out a dry, chilling chuckle on the monitor. "They underestimate you, Claire. And they distinctly forgot that I do not go quietly into retirement. Vance, release the subterranean audit we conducted on Marcus Sterling three years ago. Agent Miller, I believe your colleagues at the Southern District of New York have an outstanding arrest warrant for wire fraud with Sterling’s real name on it."

Miller looked between Arthur and me, his jaw set. "If we prove the proffer was fabricated with malicious intent, Brandon's bail will be revoked permanently. He will face an automatic twenty-year mandatory minimum for conspiracy to defraud the federal government."
"Good," I said without an ounce of remorse. "Give me twenty minutes to get dressed. I'm going to the Cook County facility. I want to look my brother in the eyes when his salvation turns to ash."
