Chapter 23 - The Shadow in Geneva

It was two in the morning when I finally returned to my penthouse, exhausted but filled with an intoxicating sense of victory.

The city lights sparkled below like diamonds scattered across black velvet. I poured myself a single glass of vintage champagne, kicked off my designer heels, and sat by the panoramic window, admiring the quiet majesty of Lake Michigan. Brandon was locked away; my parents were evicted and facing criminal trial; Blackwell was neutralized; and my career was at an unprecedented peak.

Then, an unfamiliar sound broke the silence.

It wasn't my personal smartphone. It wasn't my encrypted corporate device.

The sound was coming from the bottom drawer of my mahogany credenza—a low, rhythmic, electronic pulse that I had never heard before.

My heart tightened with instant caution. I set my champagne glass down and walked slowly toward the credenza.

I slid open the bottom drawer. Inside, nestled beneath old tax filings, was a matte-black satellite burner phone, its small monochrome screen blinking insistently with an incoming call from an unlisted international country code: *+41 22 — Geneva, Switzerland.*

I had never seen this phone before in my life. It wasn't mine.

With a steady breath, I picked up the device and pressed the green answer button, bringing the receiver to my ear without saying a word.

A distorted, mechanically modulated voice spoke through the speaker, chilling the air in my penthouse instantly:

"Congratulations on your promotion, Miss Henderson. You played the board masterfully. You eliminated Donald Blackwell and Marcus Sterling with exquisite precision, exactly as we anticipated."

My blood ran cold. "Who is this?"

"You think your family was acting alone when they forged those documents six years ago?" the voice said with a soft, eerie laugh. "Eleanor was an amateur. Blackwell was an arrogant fool. They were merely the bait we sacrificed to put you in Arthur Kensington’s seat. Check your private equity account, Claire. We just wired forty million dollars into your blind trust."

My laptop on the desk chimed with a sudden notification: *Wire Transfer Received: $40,000,000.00 USD — Origin: St. Gotthard Private Reserve, Geneva.*

"We own the controlling shares now, Claire," the voice whispered through the satellite receiver. "And tomorrow morning, your real job begins. Answer the second ring when we call again, or your brother won't survive his first week in federal custody."

The line went completely dead.
