Chapter 9 - Blood and Platinum
The wedding was unlike any high-society ceremony Chicago had ever witnessed.
There were no silk flower arrangements, no symphony orchestra, no rows of superficial socialites competing for cameras. Instead, the vows were spoken in the dimly lit master suite of the fortified lakefront mansion, illuminated only by the crackling embers of the hearth and the pale moonlight reflecting off the frozen lake outside.
Eleanor Hale sat propped against her pillows, holding young Toby’s hand as the little boy watched with sleepy, fascinated eyes. Two armed enforcers stood guard at the double doors, tactical rifles slung across their chests, serving as official legal witnesses alongside Dr. Bennett.
Father Thomas cleared his throat, adjusting his spectacles as he looked at the couple standing before him.
Clara had not changed out of her simple clothes; she still wore a dark sweater Vincent had given her, but her presence was radiant. Her natural beauty outshone any diamond. Beside her, Vincent stood tall and commanding, his eyes never wavering from her face.
“Vincent Hale,” Father Thomas began, his aged voice carrying a sacred weight through the quiet room. “Do you take Clara Ellis to be your lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”
Vincent didn't blink. His voice resonated with ironclad finality. “I do. And I swear to defend her honor, her life, and her peace with every weapon at my command, so long as breath remains in my body.”
Father Thomas nodded, turning to Clara. “And do you, Clara Ellis, take Vincent Hale to be your lawful wedded husband, to walk beside him in light and in shadow, to share his burdens and his victories, until death do you part?”
Clara felt the heavy platinum band on her finger, feeling the warmth of Vincent’s massive hand enveloping hers. She looked past the ruthless reputation, past the empire of steel and gunpowder, straight into the lonely, wounded heart of the man who had chosen her over the entire world.
“I do,” Clara said, her voice clear, steady, and filled with unwavering conviction. “With all my heart.”
“By the authority vested in me by God and the ancient laws of the Hale Syndicate,” Father Thomas declared, making the sign of the cross over their joined hands, “I pronounce you husband and wife. Don Vincent... you may kiss your bride.”
Vincent didn't wait. He pulled Clara against his chest, dipping her slightly as his lips claimed hers in a deep, passionate kiss that seemed to banish the cold, violent world waiting beyond the fortress walls.
Eleanor dabbed a tear from her cheek, while Toby clapped his small hands in delight.
“Yay! Clara is my mommy now!” Toby cheered.
Vincent slowly broke the kiss, resting his forehead against Clara’s as they both breathed heavily. A genuine, radiant smile broke across Clara’s face at Toby’s words. She turned to the bed, opening her arms as Toby leaped up and threw himself into her embrace.
“I love you, Clara,” Toby whispered into her neck.
“I love you too, my sweet boy,” Clara murmured, kissing his forehead. “I will always be here for you.”
Vincent watched the scene, a profound sense of peace washing over his battle-hardened soul. For six years, ever since his first wife had been taken by illness, his home had been a cold, silent fortress of duty and paranoia. In a single night, this woman had transformed it into a sanctuary filled with warmth, loyalty, and hope.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors swung open.
Julian stepped into the room, his tactical vest covered in snow. His face was grim.
“Boss,” Julian said quietly. “The emergency syndicate summit has been called. The heads of the Five Families are gathering at the Downtown Union Club at nine o'clock this morning. They received word of the explosion at your manor.”
Vincent’s demeanor hardened instantly. He gently patted Toby’s back, stepped away from the bed, and walked toward Julian.
“Who called the summit?” Vincent asked, his voice razor-sharp.
“Don Salvatore Moretti,” Julian replied. “He claims that because the Hale-Voss alliance has fractured and gun battles erupted in the residential district, your leadership has compromised the safety of the entire city. And Boss... Viktor Petrov’s New York delegation has just landed at O’Hare.”
Eleanor let out a cold, bitter laugh from the bed. “Salvatore Moretti is an opportunistic hyena. He thinks you are wounded, Vincent. He thinks the Hale Syndicate is bleeding out.”
“Let him think it,” Vincent sneered coldly. “It will make cutting his throat all the more satisfying.”
Vincent turned back to Clara. He looked at her simple attire, then turned to Dr. Bennett.
“Call Madame Laurent at the Gold Coast boutique,” Vincent ordered. “Have her bring her entire couture collection to this estate within two hours. Dressmakers, jewelers, stylists. I want my wife dressed like an empress before we leave for the Union Club.”
Clara’s eyes widened. “Vincent... you want me to come with you to the mafia summit?”
Vincent walked back to her, reaching out to gently trace the jawline of his new bride.

“The vultures think I am weak, Clara,” Vincent said, his eyes burning with lethal determination. “They think my house has fallen into chaos. Tomorrow morning, I will walk into that boardroom with the woman who saved my family on my arm. You are the Don’s wife now. You will sit at the right hand of my throne, and together, we will show this city who rules it.”
