Chapter 15 - Midnight Reckoning

The night sky over Lake Michigan exploded in vibrant bursts of emerald, crimson, and gold as midnight struck across the Chicago skyline. Fireworks rained down in dazzling arches, celebrating the arrival of the New Year.

Forty miles south, in the snow-blanketed industrial wasteland of Gary, Indiana, a different kind of fire tore through the night.

*BOOM!*

The heavy steel gates of the Petrov-Voss munitions complex were blown thirty feet into the air by thermite breaching charges.

Three armored tactical trucks roared through the flames, followed by forty black-clad Hale operatives moving in disciplined, lethal formations.

Inside the central control office, Rosalind Voss was screaming, tossing diamond jewelry into a duffel bag while her father, Marcus Voss Sr., frantically tried to erase hard drives with a degaussing magnet.

“Viktor Petrov abandoned us!” Rosalind wept hysterically, mascara running down her flushed cheeks. “His private jet took off for Moscow twenty minutes ago! He left us to die!”

“Shut up and grab the passport cache!” Marcus Sr. snarled, his wrinkled hands trembling. “We have an underground tunnel to the rail yard—!”

The heavy reinforced office door exploded inward, blown off its hinges by a breaching charge.

Through the smoke stepped Vincent Hale.

He looked like the god of war incarnate. Dressed in tactical black armor over his tailored clothes, his rifle raised, his face smeared with soot, his dark eyes burned with absolute, unyielding retribution.

Behind him, Julian and four enforcers fanned out, their weapons trained on the elder Voss and his daughter.

Marcus Voss Sr. raised a trembling revolver, but before he could squeeze the trigger, Julian fired a single round through the old man’s shoulder, sending him crashing into the shattered glass of the office window.

“Father!” Rosalind shrieked, collapsing to her knees in the corner.

Vincent lowered his rifle, allowing it to hang by its tactical sling, and drew his matte-black 1911 pistol. He walked toward Rosalind, his heavy boots crunching over spent casings and shattered glass.

“Vincent... please!” Rosalind sobbed, crawling toward him on her knees, clutching at the hem of his tactical trousers. “I loved you! I did everything because I wanted to be your queen! That maid... she’s nothing! She tricked you! She used her grandfather’s old records to steal our money!”

Vincent looked down at her with nothing but cold, unadulterated disgust.

“Clara didn't steal your money, Rosalind,” Vincent said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet rumble. “She reclaimed what your murderous family stole from hers thirty years ago.”

Vincent kicked her hands away from his boots.

“You locked my mother in a subterranean tomb,” Vincent continued, his gun raising steadily until the barrel rested against the center of Rosalind’s forehead. “You plotted to send my six-year-old son across the world so you could control my throne. You sold out this city to Russian butchers.”

Rosalind’s eyes went wide with pure, paralyzing terror. She looked into Vincent’s eyes, searching for a single shred of the man she had manipulated for two years.

She found only an abyss.

“Vincent... please... it’s New Year’s Day...” she whimpered, tears pouring over the cold steel of the barrel pressed to her skull.

“Happy New Year, Rosalind,” Vincent whispered.

*BANG.*

The gunshot echoed through the burning warehouse, swallowed instantly by the roaring fireworks bursting in the distant sky.
