Chapter 17 - Dawn of an Era

Three weeks later, the grand restoration of Hale Manor was complete.

The signs of battle had been entirely erased. The marble floors had been re-polished until they mirrored the glittering crystal chandeliers above. The broken balustrades were replaced with hand-carved mahogany, and the dining room—once the site of betrayal—was now filled with warmth, laughter, and fragrant fresh flowers.

In the master suite, Clara stood before a three-way gilded mirror, adjusting the sapphire cufflinks on her tailored cream pantsuit.

Her life had changed irrevocably. She was no longer Clara Ellis, the girl who woke at four in the morning to scrub kitchen pots. She was Donna Clara, the respected patroness of Chicago, overseeing the syndicate’s massive philanthropic foundation and managing the legitimate banking trusts her grandfather had built.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind.

Vincent leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder, his dark eyes meeting hers in the reflection of the glass. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the top buttons unfastened, his dark hair still damp from the shower.

“You look stunning, my queen,” Vincent murmured, his lips tracing the sensitive curve of her neck, sending a warm, familiar shiver down her spine.

Clara smiled, leaning back against his broad chest and resting her hands over his.

“I was just thinking about that Christmas Eve dinner,” Clara confessed softly. “How terrified I was when I lowered that plate of cinnamon stars onto the table next to you.”

Vincent turned her around in his arms, his hands settling affectionately on the small of her back.

“That was the moment my life truly began, Clara,” Vincent said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. “For six years, I was a dead man walking through an empire of blood and concrete. You didn't just save my mother’s life that night. You saved my soul.”

Clara reached up, gently tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “And you gave me a family, Vincent. You gave me Toby, and you gave me a love I never thought I was worthy of.”

“You are worthy of the world,” Vincent vowed softly, leaning down to capture her lips in a sweet, tender kiss that melted away every lingering shadow of the past.

A sudden knock on the bedroom door broke their embrace.

Toby bounced into the room, wearing a neat little navy blazer and matching shorts, carrying a drawing in his hands.

“Mommy! Daddy! Look what I drew!” Toby shouted, leaping onto the edge of the king-sized bed.

Clara and Vincent walked over to the bed together. Clara sat beside Toby, taking the paper from his hands.

On the paper was a crayon drawing of four figures standing outside a large house under a bright yellow sun: Vincent in a black suit, Clara in an emerald dress wearing a sparkling blue crown, Toby holding a teddy bear, and Eleanor sitting in a rocking chair on the porch.

And beneath the drawing, in uneven child’s handwriting, Toby had written: *MY FAMILY.*

Tears of pure happiness glistened in Clara’s eyes. She pulled Toby into her lap, burying her face in his hair. “It’s the most beautiful drawing in the world, Toby.”

Vincent sat on the other side of Toby, placing one massive hand over Clara’s, his fingers interlacing with hers. He looked at the drawing, then at his wife and his son.
