Chapter 14 - The Digital Siege
The following morning—New Year’s Eve—the lakefront fortress was transformed into a digital command center.
Julian and Vincent’s elite cyber-warfare team set up eight high-speed encrypted terminals in the lower conference room. Clara sat at the head of the long glass table, surrounded by financial analysts who looked at her not with condescension, but with breathless anticipation.
Clara held the yellowed ledger Eleanor had given her—the personal records of her grandfather, Thomas Ellis.
“The Voss cartel never changed their core banking architecture,” Clara explained, pointing at an encrypted string of alphanumeric routing codes on her screen. “Old man Marcus Voss Sr. used a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called ‘Aegis Maritime Holdings.’ All of their black-market payments for weapons and mercenary retainers flow through this secondary account before dispersing to Zurich.”
One of the lead analysts, a young genius named Leo, rapidly typed the strings into his terminal. Within seconds, a series of red access bars turned bright green.
“Holy hell, Boss,” Leo gasped, looking up at Vincent, who stood behind Clara’s chair, watching the screens with crossed arms. “She’s right. It’s an unpatched legacy backdoor. It bypasses their two-factor biometric encryption entirely!”
Vincent placed a hand on Clara’s shoulder, a dangerous smirk playing across his lips. “Drain it.”
Clara’s fingers danced across the keyboard with calm, surgical precision.
With three keypresses, over two hundred and forty million dollars in liquid funds belonging to the Voss family and Viktor Petrov’s Midwest account were frozen, flagged for international terrorism by dummy shell accounts Clara routed through Interpol, and transferred into the Hale Syndicate’s private trust.
“Transfer complete,” Clara announced, looking back over her shoulder at Vincent.
At that exact moment, fifty miles away in the Gary warehouse, pandemonium erupted.
Across the tapped audio feeds streaming into the conference room, the frantic voice of Marcus Voss Sr.—who had just arrived via helicopter—bellowed through the speakers: *“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?! The mercenaries are refusing to board the transport trucks until their wire clears! Call Zurich! Call them now!”*
Then came the shrill, hysterical shriek of Rosalind Voss: *“It’s Hale! He’s doing this! How is he accessing father’s private accounts?!”*
Vincent leaned down to the central microphone on the table, pressing the transmit button directly linked to Rosalind’s personal satellite phone.
“It’s not me, Rosalind,” Vincent’s voice purred through the line, chillingly calm and utterly devastating. “It’s my wife. Clara Ellis-Hale sends her regards to your bankrupt family.”
A gasp of pure, suffocating horror echoed from the speaker before the line went dead.
The entire room erupted into cheers. The analysts clapped, while Julian let out a barking laugh of pure triumph.
“Boss!” Julian said, racking his submachine gun. “Their mercenary garrison has broken formation! Half the Russian contractors are walking off the site because their pay bounced! The complex is operating at less than forty percent defense capacity!”
Vincent stepped back from the table, his eyes locking onto Clara with supreme reverence.
“Julian,” Vincent commanded, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. “Mobilize Strike Teams Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. We hit the Gary complex at twenty-three hundred hours, right as the New Year’s fireworks begin across the city.”
He looked down at Clara, extending his hand to help her rise from the chair.
“You’ve won the financial war, my love,” Vincent murmured, kissing the back of her hand. “Now, stay here with Toby and my mother. Let me finish the rest.”
Clara looked into his dark, determined eyes. Her heart ached with fear for him, but she knew that this was the final purge required to secure their future.
“Come back to me, Vincent,” Clara whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him down for a deep, desperate kiss. “Promise me you will come back alive.”
Vincent held her against his chest, breathing in her sweetness, feeling the ring on her finger pressing into his back.
May you like
“I have an empire to rule with you, Clara,” Vincent vowed against her lips. “Nothing in heaven or hell can keep me from returning to your side.”
