Chapter 18 - Shadows in the Harbor

Yet in the world of blood and iron, peace was never permanent; it was a fragile truce purchased with lead and maintained through vigilance.

Two months later, the spring thaw had begun. The ice on Lake Michigan had cracked into drifting floes, and the bustling Chicago commercial docks were operating at maximum capacity under the unified control of the Hale Syndicate.

Clara sat in Vincent’s private office at the harbor administration building, reviewing shipping manifests alongside Julian.

“All three shipments from Rotterdam cleared customs without inspection,” Julian reported, tapping a digital ledger. “The port authority knows better than to delay your consignments, Donna Clara. Since you established the dockworkers’ health pension, the entire labor union is personally loyal to you.”

Clara smiled faintly. “Treating men with dignity earns far more loyalty than threatening their families, Julian.”

Julian looked at her with profound respect. “The Boss says the exact same thing about you every day, ma'am.”

Before Clara could reply, the heavy office door opened.

Vincent strode into the room, accompanied by Dominic, whose shoulder wound had fully healed. But Vincent’s expression was not the relaxed, loving face he showed at home.

His eyes were cold, razor-sharp, and calculating.

“Julian,” Vincent commanded, closing the door behind him. “Lock down the harbor perimeter. Order all cargo unloading halted on Pier 14.”

Clara stood up from the desk, her instincts immediately alert. “Vincent? What is it? What happened on Pier 14?”

Vincent walked over to her, his posture protective as he placed his hands on her shoulders.

“A private yacht registered to an offshore trust in the British Virgin Islands docked fifteen minutes ago,” Vincent explained quietly. “They didn't file flight manifests, and they bypassed harbor customs using an old diplomatic clearance code.”

Clara’s brow furrowed. “Whose clearance code?”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“The Voss diplomatic seal,” Vincent said.

Clara’s heart stopped. “That’s impossible. Marcus Sr. and Rosalind are dead. Marcus Jr. is still locked in our cellar awaiting military extradition.”

“The Voss family had a third child, Clara,” Dominic interjected from the doorway, holding a black leather dossier. “The eldest son. Damien Voss. Ten years ago, he was exiled by his father to Europe because his methods were considered too depraved, even for a cartel.”

Dominic opened the dossier, revealing a photograph of a pale, handsome man in his late thirties with piercing gray eyes and a cruel, serpentine smile.

“Damien Voss took over the French syndicate in Marseilles,” Dominic continued. “He has an army of former legionnaires and international black-market mercenaries. And according to harbor surveillance... he didn't come to negotiate.”

Vincent looked down at Clara, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying flame.

“He came for blood, Clara,” Vincent whispered. “He came to avenge his family.”
