Chapter 6 - The Matriarch’s Will
The Lakefront Estate was a sprawling, fortified sanctuary nestled against the dark waters of Lake Michigan. Surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls and patrolled by eighty of Vincent’s most loyal veterans, it was an impregnable fortress.
In the second-floor master suite, Eleanor Hale was resting in a massive king-sized bed, hooked up to an IV drip. Her color had already begun to return, thanks to Dr. Bennett’s attentive care.
When the double doors opened, Vincent walked in, carrying a sleeping Toby in his arms, followed closely by Clara.
Eleanor’s face lit up with profound relief. “Vincent... Toby...”
Vincent gently placed Toby on the edge of the bed. The little boy stirred, saw his grandmother, and immediately crawled under the covers beside her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
“Grandma,” Toby mumbled sleepily. “You’re out of the quiet room.”
“Yes, my sweet boy,” Eleanor whispered, tears trickling down her wrinkled cheeks as she kissed the top of Toby’s head. “Grandma is out. And I’m never leaving you again.”
Vincent approached the bed and kissed his mother’s forehead, then took a step back, gesturing for Clara to come forward.
Clara approached hesitantly, but Eleanor reached out both hands, grasping Clara’s wrists with surprising strength.
“Clara, my brave child,” Eleanor said, her voice trembling with emotion. “You kept your promise. You faced that viper Rosalind and saved my life.”
“Lady Eleanor, I only did what was right,” Clara replied, kneeling beside the bed so Eleanor didn't have to strain. “You treated me like family when I had no one. I would have died before I let them hurt you.”
Eleanor turned her gaze toward Vincent, her eyes flashing with the old, indomitable fire that had commanded respect across the country for four decades.
“Vincent,” Eleanor said firmly.
“Yes, Mother?”
“Did you destroy the engagement contract with the Voss family?”
“It was incinerated tonight,” Vincent replied without hesitation. “Marcus is in the dungeon. Rosalind is exiled. Our strike teams are currently seizing every asset the Voss family owns in three states. By noon tomorrow, the Voss cartel will cease to exist.”
Eleanor nodded grimly. “Good. Old man Voss thought because my husband was dead and I was aging, the Hales had grown soft. He thought he could use his poisonous daughter to puppet you and murder me.”
Eleanor shifted slightly, sitting up higher against her pillows. Her sharp gaze flickered between Vincent and Clara.
“Vincent, this war is far from over,” Eleanor warned. “When the other syndicate families—the Morettis, the Chengs, the Bratva in New York—hear that the Hale-Voss alliance has collapsed in blood, they will smell weakness. They will gather like vultures to see if you can hold the crown alone.”
“Let them come,” Vincent sneered coldly. “I will stack their bodies alongside the Vosses.”
“Brute force is not enough to maintain an empire, my son,” Eleanor said, cutting him off with maternal authority. “You need stability. You need an heir who is legally protected. And most of all, you need a wife by your side who possesses true honor, courage, and loyalty.”
Vincent froze. Clara’s breath caught in her throat.
Eleanor reached onto the bedside table and picked up an ornate mahogany box lined with crimson velvet. She opened it to reveal the Hale ancestral engagement ring—a breathtaking, flawless seven-carat cushion-cut blue diamond surrounded by a halo of platinum wolves.
It was the ring that had belonged to Vincent’s grandmother, a ring reserved only for the true Queen of the Hale Syndicate. Vincent had refused to give it to Rosalind, opting instead for a commercial diamond from Cartier.
Eleanor held the box out toward Vincent.
“Mother... what are you doing?” Vincent asked, his voice suddenly thick with tension.
Eleanor looked directly at Clara, then back at her son.
“You were blind for two years, Vincent,” Eleanor said plainly. “You thought you needed a ruthless socialite to survive in our world. But tonight, this girl showed more courage than all your soldiers combined. Toby loves her. I owe her my life. And if you have a single drop of your father’s wisdom in your veins, you will realize that God sent her to save this family from darkness.”
Eleanor locked eyes with her son.
