Chapter 3 - The Freeze Out
The arrest of Beatrice Sterling was neither quiet nor dignified. She was escorted down the cobblestone driveway in silver bracelets, screaming curses that echoed off the neighboring multi-million-dollar estates. Mason followed the squad car in his leased Porsche Cayenne—a vehicle registered under Valerie’s corporate LLC—shouting into his phone as he sped toward the precinct.
Valerie stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of her kitchen, watching the red tail lights vanish into the desert night. The house was finally quiet, but it was not empty. It was filled with the ghosts of five years of emotional servitude.
She walked into her home office, locked the heavy oak door, and sat down behind her glass desk. Her lip throbbed with a dull, steady ache, but her mind had never been sharper.
She opened her primary banking portal.
For years, Valerie had maintained a shared ecosystem: an executive high-yield checking account that fed into three authorized user cards. One black card for Mason. One gold card for Beatrice’s “emergencies and household procurement.” Another card for Chloe, Mason’s twenty-six-year-old sister who worked as an aspiring “fashion curator” in Scottsdale, whose rent Valerie had been paying blindly under the guise of “helping family find their footing.”
Valerie logged into the primary administrative account.
Her fingers danced over the mechanical keyboard with practiced precision.
*Card 1: Mason Sterling. Status: ACTIVE. Limit: $25,000/month.*
Valerie clicked **TERMINATE CARD**.
*Reason: Suspected unauthorized use.*
*Card 2: Beatrice Sterling. Status: ACTIVE. Limit: $10,000/month.*
Valerie clicked **TERMINATE CARD**.
*Reason: Revoked authorization.*
*Card 3: Chloe Sterling. Status: ACTIVE. Limit: $8,000/month.*
Valerie clicked **TERMINATE CARD**.
Next, she accessed the corporate portal for her logistics consultancy firm. The Porsche Cayenne Mason drove was on a commercial master lease paid by her business account. She opened the fleet management dashboard, located the vehicle’s remote telematics, and entered the secure override code.
*Vehicle status: Moving. Command: DISABLE ENGINE UPON NEXT RESTART.*
Then, she pulled up the utility management for Beatrice’s private guest cottage—a detached, two-bedroom luxury casita located at the edge of the estate grounds. High-speed fiber internet, premium satellite television, automated smart-climate HVAC.
Valerie clicked down the list. Cancel. Cancel. Cancel.
By 1:30 AM, Valerie’s phone began to vibrate violently on the desk.
The screen flashed: **CHLOE (SIL)**.
Valerie ignored it. A second later, a notification popped up from an all-night VIP lounge in Old Town Scottsdale: *Declined transaction: $1,420.00 at Velvet Room Nightclub.*
Two seconds later, Chloe’s text appeared: *Valerie??? My card just got declined in front of my investors and friends!! What the hell is going on? Turn it back on right now, it’s so embarrassing!*
Valerie took a slow sip of cold ice water, looked at the message, and blocked the number.
