Chapter 2 - The Ice Queen Awakes

The blue and red strobes of two police cruisers painted the living room walls in violent, rhythmic slashes of light. Outside, neighbors on the manicured cul-de-sac were already parting their blinds, whispering behind desert-landscaped hedges.

Officer Ramirez, a seasoned patrol sergeant with ten years on the force, stood in the center of the marble entry, his notebook open. Officer Chen, his partner, was taking close-up photographs of Valerie’s split lip and the faint bruising already rising on her jawline.

“So you’re telling me,” Officer Ramirez said, looking at Mason and Beatrice with a flat, unimpressed stare, “that Mrs. Sterling here attacked both of you unprovoked?”

“She shoved me!” Beatrice wailed, now sitting on the velvet sofa wrapped in a cashmere throw—another gift from Valerie. “I lost my footing! I’m an old woman! Mason saw it with his own eyes!”

“I came through the door and saw Valerie standing over my mother while she screamed on the floor,” Mason said, his voice slick with rehearsed indignation. “Officer, my wife has severe anger management issues. Her corporate stress is out of control. She snapped. We just want her to get help, but she needs to be removed from this property tonight for our safety.”

Valerie didn't say a single word. She stood by the kitchen island, holding an ice pack against her lip, watching the performance with detached curiosity.

“Mrs. Sterling?” Officer Ramirez turned to Valerie. “Do you have a statement?”

“I don't need to make a statement, Officer,” Valerie replied calmly. She set a high-resolution iPad on the counter, facing the officers. “I have evidence. Please observe the timestamp at 5:42 PM.”

She tapped the screen.

The ultra-clear 4K video played with pristine, directional audio. Beatrice’s screeching voice filled the room: *“You ungrateful bitch!”* The sharp, sickening crack of the slap echoed through the speakers with horrifying clarity. Then came the image of Valerie catching Beatrice’s wrist, Beatrice losing balance as she tried to pull away, deliberately throwing herself backward onto the rug, and screaming: *“She attacked me! Mason is going to see what a monster you really are!”*

The room went dead silent.

Officer Ramirez’s pen stopped moving. Officer Chen slowly lowered her camera, her eyes locking onto Beatrice with open disgust.

Mason’s jaw hung open. “Valerie… wait. That’s… you took that out of context—”

“Out of context?” Officer Ramirez interrupted, his voice dropping into arctic authority. He turned slowly toward Beatrice. “Ma’am, stand up.”

“What?” Beatrice gasped, clutching the cashmere blanket tighter. “Officer, I have a heart condition! She baited me! She was withholding my living expenses! She provoked me!”

“You committed a physical assault, ma’am, and based on this footage, you attempted to falsify a police report,” Ramirez stated, unhooking the pair of handcuffs from his utility belt. “Stand up and put your hands behind your back.”

“Mason! Mason, do something!” Beatrice shrieked, scrambling backward across the sofa cushions like a cornered animal. “You’re the man of this house! Don't let them touch me!”

Mason lunged forward, waving his hands. “Officer, please, this is a family misunderstanding! We don't want to press charges! Valerie, tell them! Tell them you won't press charges!”

Valerie looked at her husband. For five years, she had covered his failed startup attempts, paid off his luxury truck, endured his mother’s sneers, and shouldered the entire financial burden of their lives while he played the role of the misunderstood entrepreneur.

“I am pressing charges,” Valerie said, every syllable like an iron spike driven into the floor. “Assault and battery. And Mason? Pack your bags. You’re leaving with her.”
