Chapter 20 - The Rising Sun

Three months later.

The morning sun rose over the red rocks of Camelback Mountain, casting long, golden beams across the sparkling infinity pool of 4410 Palomino Ridge. The air was crisp, clean, and carrying the faint, sweet scent of desert sage after an early autumn rain.

Valerie Thorne sat on her patio lounge chair, dressed in a comfortable cashmere sweater, sipping a warm mug of artisanal matcha tea. Her lower lip was completely healed, without even a faint scar remaining.

Beside her, Clara Morales set down a fresh stack of corporate press releases and the morning edition of the *Arizona Republic*.

Valerie glanced at the front page.

**“FORMER APEX MEDIA EXECUTIVES SENTENCED IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD SCHEME.”**

The article detailed Mason Sterling’s formal plea agreement: eighty-four months in federal custody at FCI Safford, followed by three years of supervised release and five hundred thousand dollars in mandatory restitution.

Beatrice Sterling had pleaded guilty to accessory charges and falsifying police records; her sentence included three years of intensive felony probation, five hundred hours of community service picking up trash along the valley freeways, and an unbending, permanent restraining order barring her from ever contacting Valerie Thorne or entering Paradise Valley.

Chloe Sterling was currently working two shifts a day as a server at a twenty-four-hour diner in East Mesa, living in a shared studio apartment with three roommates, her influencer dreams completely extinguished.

Valerie took a slow, peaceful sip of her tea.

“Arthur called from the Tokyo office,” Clara said with a wide, radiant smile. “The board of directors met at 8:00 AM Eastern time. The vote was unanimous, Valerie.”

Clara handed her the official corporate memorandum.

**MERIDIAN LOGISTICS GLOBAL ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF VALERIE THORNE AS GLOBAL CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER.**

Valerie looked down at the paper. Her salary had doubled. Her international authority had expanded across four continents. Her wealth, her future, and her freedom were entirely, unequivocally her own.

No more leeches. No more guilt trips. No more handing over thirty thousand dollars a month to buy the fake affection of parasites who mistook kindness for weakness.

Her phone chimed on the small glass table.

A text message from an unknown number appeared:

*“Valerie, it’s Beatrice. I’m doing my community service on the highway today. My shoes are worn through. I don't have enough money for lunch. Please, for the love of God, send just fifty dollars—”*

Valerie looked at the message for two seconds.

She didn't get angry. She didn't feel a pang of guilt. A quiet, beautiful smile touched her lips.

Her thumb tapped the screen with practiced, graceful ease: **BLOCK NUMBER. DELETE THREAD.**

Valerie stood up, walked to the edge of the stone terrace, and looked out over the vast, sun-drenched horizon of the desert. The sky was boundless, clear, and full of limitless promise.

She took a deep, liberating breath of the morning air.

Her new life had just begun.
