Chapter 18 - Chloe's Reckoning

The fall of Chloe Sterling was swift, public, and brutal.

Two days after being dropped by her agency, Chloe was spotted sitting inside a crowded Starbucks on Camelback Road, charging her half-broken iPhone using the public outlet while nursing a cup of tap water.

Her once-glamorous Instagram account, which had boasted high-fashion outfits and luxury poolside photoshoots, had become a ghost town. Her follower count had plummeted by thirty thousand after Valerie’s video exposed the truth. Every post she made was bombarded with clown emojis, links to the assault footage, and mockery:

*“Where’s the luxury lifestyle now, Chloe?”*

*“Did Valerie pay for that Starbucks cup too?”*

*“Get a real job, you scammer!”*

Suddenly, two men in dark polo shirts with badges clipped to their belts walked into the café, heading straight for her table.

“Chloe Sterling?”

Chloe gasped, instantly gathering her plastic bags closer to her chest. “Who are you? Are you more of Valerie’s lawyers? Leave me alone! I don't have anything left!”

“We’re repossession agents contracted by Luxury Auto Leasing of Scottsdale,” the taller man said, showing a recovery order. “We’re here to execute the recovery of the 2023 Mercedes C-Class sedan registered under your name.”

“I don't have the car!” Chloe cried hysterically. “It’s parked on the third floor of the Fashion Square garage! You can't take it! That car is my brand! How am I supposed to go to auditions without a car?”

“The lease payments are ninety days delinquent, Miss Sterling,” the agent said, his voice entirely flat. “The guarantor, Valerie Thorne, formally withdrew as secondary guarantor seventy-two hours ago. The vehicle has been flagged for immediate impound.”

He held out his hand. “Key fob. Now.”

Sobbing loudly in front of twenty customers who were recording the entire scene on their phones, Chloe dug through her dirty handbag and pulled out the electronic key, slapping it onto the table.

“I hope you’re happy!” Chloe screamed at the customers who were filming her. “I hope you’re all happy! My whole life is ruined!”

“No, Miss Sterling,” an elderly woman seated nearby said calmly over her newspaper. “Your fake life is ruined. Now you have to live a real one.”
