Chapter 14 - Tiffany's Betrayal
Mason stood frozen as two burly resort security officers placed their hands firmly on Beatrice’s shoulders, guiding her out of the ballroom while the elite of Phoenix watched in dead silence. Beatrice was weeping, hiding her face with her beaded clutch, her high-society dreams crushed into dust.
Mason turned to flee after her, but as he reached the marble terrace overlooking the resort pools, a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out from the shadows of the palm trees.
It was Julian Vance, the predatory managing partner of Blackwood Capital.
Beside Julian stood a massive man in a dark tactical polo with a visible firearm holster beneath his windbreaker.
“Mason,” Julian said, his voice smooth, pleasant, and utterly lethal. “You didn't return my calls. Five o'clock came and went. The seventy-five thousand dollars isn't in my account.”
Mason backed against the terrace railing, his heart hammering against his ribs. “Julian! Listen to me! It’s a temporary delay! Valerie Thorne—my wife—she has millions! We’re in divorce negotiations right now! Once the settlement is signed, I’ll have half her assets! I’ll pay you double!”
Julian took a slow drag from a thin cigar and blew the smoke into the warm desert air.
“Mason, you really are an amateur,” Julian sighed. “Did you honestly think I didn't verify your wife’s signature before I processed that loan?”
Mason froze. “What?”
“I knew the signature was forged the moment you submitted it,” Julian said, stepping closer until Mason could smell the tobacco on his breath. “I specialize in desperate, greedy little boys like you. I wanted that signature to be forged.”
“Why?” Mason choked out.
“Because under Arizona commercial law, a spouse isn't liable for fraudulent debts incurred through criminal forgery—meaning your wife doesn't owe me a single red cent,” Julian smiled, revealing perfectly white, predatory teeth. “Which leaves the entire four-hundred-thousand-dollar debt, plus default penalties, treble damages, and legal fees, squarely on *your* head, Mason. Personal liability. Unsecured. Non-dischargeable in bankruptcy.”
Mason’s vision blurred. “No… no, please, Julian…”
Julian snapped his fingers. The armed man behind him stepped forward, holding out a digital tablet.
“Tiffany Vance handed over your encrypted ledger this morning, Mason,” Julian said softly. “The bank routing numbers, the cash transfers, the forged corporate seals. She traded you for a clean slate. Blackwood Capital has just filed a commercial criminal referral with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
“The FBI?” Mason shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched sob.

“They take a very dim view of wire fraud crossing state lines, Mason,” Julian patted Mason’s cheek with mock affection. “You have approximately twenty-four hours before the federal indictment drops. I suggest you enjoy your last night of freedom. Because after that, you’ll be spending the next ten years eating cafeteria food in a federal penitentiary.”
