Chapter 11 - The Secret Investor

While the public destroyed the Sterling family’s remaining social standing, Valerie was seated in the high-security conference room of Vance & Sterling Legal Associates.

Marcus Vance slid a thick, dark blue binder across the glass table.

“Valerie, we pulled the full corporate charter and banking relationships for Apex Media Partners,” Marcus said, his friendly demeanor replaced by the sharp edge of an apex predator. “It’s far worse than Mason cheating on you with a fitness model.”

Valerie leaned forward. “What did he do, Marcus?”

“Mason didn't just siphon your cash reserves,” Marcus said, tapping a document bearing Valerie’s signature. “Six months ago, Mason took out a four-hundred-thousand-dollar mezzanine business loan from a private bridge lender called Blackwood Capital.”

Valerie frowned, her eyes scanning the page. “I never signed this.”

“I know you didn't,” Marcus replied. “It’s a forged signature. Mason used a high-resolution scan of your signature from your joint 2022 tax returns. He listed your personal stock portfolio at Meridian Logistics as the secondary collateral for the default guarantee.”

A cold chill ran down Valerie’s spine. Meridian stock was non-transferable without board approval, but a predatory private lender wouldn't care—they would tie Valerie up in chancery court litigation for years trying to liquidate her shares.

“Why would Blackwood Capital issue a four-hundred-thousand-dollar loan without personal verification?” Valerie asked.

“Because the managing partner of Blackwood Capital is a man named Julian Vance,” Marcus said, a bitter smirk touching his face. “No relation to me, thank God. Julian is an aggressive, gray-market lender who specializes in trapping wealthy spouses in fraudulent debt schemes. Mason told Julian that you were an unlisted silent partner who authorized the loan to keep the investment off corporate SEC filings.”

Valerie leaned back, her mind racing. “Where is the four hundred thousand dollars now?”

“That’s the beauty of it,” Marcus said, leaning in. “Mason thought he was an investing genius. He sank three hundred thousand of that capital into a speculative crypto-mining fund that collapsed three weeks ago. The remaining hundred thousand went toward lease payments on Tiffany Vance’s Tempe penthouse, luxury vacations, and designer watches.”

“And when is the first balloon payment due to Blackwood Capital?”

“Tomorrow at 5:00 PM,” Marcus whispered. “Seventy-five thousand dollars in interest-only carry. If it’s not paid, Julian Vance has the contractual right to initiate immediate asset seizure proceedings against the listed guarantor.”

Valerie looked at the forged signature on the paper. A slow, chilling smile touched her face.

“Marcus,” Valerie said softly. “Mason wanted to play the high-stakes financial game using my name. Let’s make sure he pays the house rules.”
