Chapter 8 - The Transformation

The Grand Solstice Gala was an annual event where the city’s upper crust—politicians, billionaires, judges, and high-ranking syndicate bosses—gathered beneath the guise of a high-society charity ball. In truth, it was neutral ground where territories were negotiated and alliances were displayed.

Inside the penthouse master suite, the full-length mirror reflected a woman Clara Reyes barely recognized.

The bruises on her cheek had been skillfully concealed beneath high-end cosmetics applied by the city's finest makeup artist. Her dark hair was styled into an elegant, cascading updo, secured with silver pins that caught the chandelier light.

She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her slender waist before flowing gracefully to the floor. The cut of the dress was modest yet mesmerizing, carefully tailored to hide the tight medical wrapping around her fractured ribs. Around her neck hung the silver crucifix her father had given her, polished until it gleamed like a newly minted coin.

The bedroom door opened.

Clara turned around, her heart thumping wildly against her chest.

Virgilio stood in the frame. He wore a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, tailored to perfection over his broad shoulders and commanding frame. His hair was slicked back neatly, the scar through his eyebrow lending his aristocratic features an aura of undeniable, lethal nobility.

He stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes sweeping over her from head to toe.

For several seconds, the most feared man in the territory could not speak.

"Clara," he whispered, his voice catching slightly.

Clara felt heat rise into her cheeks, looking down shyly. "Does it... do I look alright? I’ve never worn anything like this. I feel like an imposter, Mr. Marcelo."

Virgilio closed the distance between them, his heavy footsteps silent on the rug. He reached out, his thumb gently lifting her chin until her dark eyes met his.

"You look like a queen," he said softly, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "And you call me Virgilio tonight. No 'Mr. Marcelo.' Tonight, every snake, politician, and killer in this city will know that anyone who dares to look at you with malice will have to answer to me."

Clara felt a tear threaten to ruin her makeup. "Why are you being so good to me? I was just a frightened girl who knocked on your door."

"You survived eight months of hell without surrendering your dignity," Virgilio replied, his thumb brushing lightly across her cheekbone. "You are stronger than any man who tried to break you. Now, take my arm."

Clara placed her hand into the crook of his arm. Her fingers felt the iron-hard muscle beneath the fine wool. For the first time in eight months, the gnawing dread that had lived in her stomach was gone.
