Chapter 19 - The Council of Shadows
The abandoned grain silos by the industrial riverfront loomed like concrete titans against the storm-swept night sky.
Inside the vast, echoing cavern of Silo 4, thirty heavily armed Sicilian mercenaries stood guard, their tactical rifles trained on the center of the concrete floor. At the head of a makeshift conference table sat Don Salvatore Marcelo—a withered, silver-haired snake of a man with cold reptilian eyes, dressed in an immaculate white three-piece suit.
Seated around the table were the terrified bosses of the city's minor factions, coerced into attending by Salvatore’s sudden, brutal arrival.
The heavy steel doors groaned open.
Virgilio Marcelo walked into the silo.
He came accompanied by only two people: Mateo, who carried a sleek black leather briefcase, and Clara Reyes, who walked at his side dressed in an elegant black trench coat, her chin held high, fearless in the face of thirty automatic weapons.
Salvatore let out a raspy, theatrical laugh. "Nephew! Look at you. The mighty Virgilio Marcelo, brought to heel by a pretty little peasant girl."
Virgilio walked to the opposite end of the table and stopped. He rested his knuckles on the cold steel surface, his scarred eyebrow twitching with utter disdain.
"You look old, Salvatore," Virgilio said flatly. "Sicily didn't agree with you."
"I am here to claim what your father built!" Salvatore snarled, his fist slamming onto the table. "You wasted our family's strength fighting border cartels over a girl who belongs in the gutter! You disgraced the Marcelo name!"
Clara took half a step forward. Her voice was clear, resonant, and completely devoid of fear:
"Virgilio defended this city against a cartel that would have burned it to ashes. He protected the innocent while you sat across the ocean waiting like a vulture for scraps. If anyone is a disgrace to the Marcelo name, Salvatore, it is you."
The minor bosses gasped at her audacity.
Salvatore’s face contorted into pure rage. "Kill the whore!"
Four mercenaries raised their rifles toward Clara.
Virgilio didn't even flinch. He raised his left hand, snapping his fingers once.
*CRASH!*
The corrugated tin roof of the silo shattered in twelve places as flashbang grenades rained down from above.
*BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG!*
Blinding white light and concussive sound waves detonated through the cavern. The mercenaries screamed, dropping their weapons as they clutched their ears and blinded eyes.
From the high rafters, federal tactical assault teams rappelled down on heavy cables, their weapons barking with non-lethal, high-impact rubber rounds and stun darts that neutralized the Sicilian gunmen in seconds.
Federal agents swarmed through the side doors, led by Isabella Marcelo and Chief Inspector Vance.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!"
Mateo stepped forward and popped the clasps of the leather briefcase, sliding a thick stack of international warrants across the table directly in front of Salvatore.
"Tax evasion, international weapons trafficking, and three active Interpol red notices from Rome," Mateo announced smoothly. "You signed your own warrant the moment your private jet touched our tarmac."
Salvatore stared in horror at the warrants, then at Isabella standing alongside federal agents, and finally at Virgilio, who was smiling that cold, lethal wolf’s smile.
"You... you brought feds into our family business?!" Salvatore shrieked as two agents forced his hands behind his back and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. "You broke the code!"
Virgilio leaned down, whispering into his uncle's ear:
"The code died the day you threatened my family. Enjoy the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary, uncle."
As Salvatore was dragged away, screaming curses into the echoing silo, the minor bosses stood up, bowing their heads in complete, absolute submission to Virgilio Marcelo.
