Chapter 16 - Healing in the Mountain Air

Two weeks passed.

The storm that had threatened to tear the region apart had cleared completely. With Hector Morales in federal custody and his lieutenants dismantled, the cartel’s northern operations crumbled into non-existence. The Marcelo syndicate legally absorbed their distribution corridors, establishing an era of unprecedented peace across the territory.

At the mountain estate, the air was crisp, smelling of fresh pine needles and mountain snow.

Diego Reyes sat in a rocking chair on the expansive wooden veranda, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a warm cup of coffee. His color had returned, his wounds were healing under Dr. Ramos's continuous care, and the hollow despair in his eyes had been replaced by deep, quiet tranquility.

The veranda door clicked open, and Clara stepped outside, carrying a plate of warm pastries.

"Breakfast, Papa," she said with a bright, radiant smile.

Diego took a pastry, looking up at his daughter. Her bruised face was completely clear now, her porcelain skin glowing with health and life. The frightened runaway who had scrubbed floors in laundromats had transformed into a poised, confident young woman.

"You love him, don't you?" Diego asked suddenly, his voice soft and fatherly.

Clara froze, a blush instantly warming her cheeks. "Papa... he is my protector. He saved our lives."

"A man does not declare war on an empire for just an employee, Clara," Diego said, smiling gently. "I have seen the way he looks at you when he thinks no one is watching. The whole world trembles before Virgilio Marcelo, but when you enter the room, his eyes follow you like a man who has finally found his home."

Clara looked out over the pine forest, her heart fluttering. She couldn't deny it anymore. In the dark cellar, in the grand ballroom, and in the quiet library, Virgilio had become the center of her universe.

Footsteps echoed along the wooden deck.

Virgilio stepped out onto the veranda. He wore a dark woolen sweater, jeans, and heavy boots, his arm completely healed, moving without any stiffness.

"Good morning, Diego," Virgilio greeted respectfully.

"Don Virgilio," Diego nodded with deep reverence. "I will give you two some air." Diego stood up, taking his coffee and stepping back inside the warm lodge, leaving them alone beneath the towering pines.

Virgilio leaned his forearms against the wooden railing, looking out over the mountain valley.

Clara walked up beside him, resting her hands against the timber.

"Tomas called from the bar this morning," she said softly. "He says the new mahogany table has been installed. He asked when I was coming back for my shift."

Virgilio turned his head, his dark, scarred gaze locking onto hers.

"You're never working another shift in that bar, Clara," he said firmly.

Clara felt a sudden pang in her chest. "Are you firing me?"

A rare, breathtaking smile curved Virgilio’s lips. He closed the distance between them, his large, warm hands gently cupping her face.

"I am retiring you," he whispered, his voice thick with raw devotion. "I bought a small floral boutique down in the historic square yesterday. The deed is in your name. If you want it, it’s yours. And if you want to leave this city and start fresh with your father, I have already set up a trust fund that will ensure neither of you ever has to worry about money again."

Clara stared at him, tears shimmering in her eyes. "You're letting me go?"

"I promised to set you free, Clara," Virgilio said, his voice dropping to a vulnerable register that few men had ever heard. "I will not cage you in my dark world. But if you ask me what I truly want..."

He paused, his thumb gently caressing her cheek.

"What do you want, Virgilio?" she whispered, leaning into his touch.

"I want you to stay," he admitted, his heart laid bare. "Not as a waitress. Not as someone under my debt. But as the woman beside me. As my equal. My home."

Clara didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, standing on her tiptoes, and pressed her lips against his.

May you like

Virgilio’s breath hitched in surprise before his strong arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her slightly off the timber deck as he pulled her flush against his chest, kissing her with all the pent-up passion, relief, and devotion of a man who had finally found redemption.
