Chapter 13 - An Unexpected Message

Night settled over the pine forest. The fortress estate was a flurry of quiet, lethal preparation. Men in dark tactical gear cleaned automatic rifles, loaded drum magazines, and coordinated satellite communication frequencies in the lower war room.

Clara could not sleep.

She wandered the high-ceilinged corridors of the main lodge, wrapped in a heavy knitted cardigan. As she passed Virgilio’s private office, she saw the door slightly ajar, warm amber light spilling onto the polished timber.

Virgilio was seated behind a vast desk, looking at an old framed photograph.

Clara hesitated at the door. "Virgilio?"

He looked up, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Come in, Clara."

She walked in and sat in the leather chair across from him. Her eyes drifted to the photograph on the desk. It showed a young, smiling woman in a nurse's uniform, her arm thrown playfully around a younger, unscarred Virgilio.

"Isabella?" Clara asked gently.

Virgilio nodded once. "Taken two weeks before the attack."

He pushed a piece of paper across the desk toward Clara.

"She called my private line an hour ago," Virgilio revealed, his voice carrying a tremor of raw emotion.

Clara looked at him, astonished. "Your sister? After seven years?"

"Word moves fast in our world," Virgilio said, leaning back into his chair. "She heard that the Boss of El Puente had publicly declared war on Hector Morales over a bruised waitress. She called to ask if I had lost my mind."

"What did you tell her?"

Virgilio looked deeply into Clara’s eyes. "I told her that seven years ago, I was a coward who hid behind my soldiers while my family suffered. I told her that for the first time in my life, I was fighting not for territory or pride, but to protect someone who truly deserved saving."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. "And what did she say?"

"She cried," Virgilio whispered. "And then she told me... *'Don't come back dead, brother. I want to meet her.'*"

Tears welled up in Clara’s eyes once more. She reached across the desk and laid her hand over his scarred knuckles.

"Thank you," she whispered. "For everything."

Virgilio turned his hand over, intertwining his long, calloused fingers with hers. His grip was warm, protective, and unyielding.

"Tomorrow night, Clara, your nightmare ends," he promised. "And when it's over... you will never have to run again."
