Chapter 11 - The Fortress in the Pines

Thirty miles north of the city, hidden deep within a dense forest of towering pines, lay the Marcelo ancestral estate.

Encircled by ten-foot stone walls topped with razor wire, thermal cameras, and patrolled by elite guards with trained mastiffs, the estate was not merely a home—it was an impenetrable fortress.

The convoy rolled through the iron gates as dawn began to bleed rose-gold light across the mountain ridge.

Dr. Ramos was already waiting inside the main lodge with an emergency trauma kit. Within thirty minutes, Virgilio’s arm had been disinfected, stitched with seven black sutures, and wrapped in clean bandages.

Virgilio sat on a leather sofa in the great stone library, a glass of dark scotch in his hand, shirtless from the waist up to allow the bandage to set. His broad torso was a tapestry of old scars—knife wounds, bullet grazes, and the dark ink of his family's criminal lineage.

Clara walked in quietly, carrying a fresh pot of coffee. She had changed into a warm gray sweater and dark leggings, her face scrubbed clean of gala makeup.

She set the tray on the coffee table. Her eyes drifted to the fresh bandage on his arm, and then to the scarred muscle of his chest.

"Does it hurt?" she asked softly.

Virgilio looked up, taking a sip of his scotch. "I've had worse from falling off bicycles as a boy. Sit down, Clara."

She sat on the opposite end of the sofa, curling her legs beneath her. The warmth from the massive stone fireplace crackled pleasantly, filling the room with the scent of burning birch.

"The men from last night," she said quietly. "Were they Morales's people?"

"Half of them," Virgilio replied. "The other half were mercenaries hired by Cruz in a desperate attempt to retrieve the ledger before Morales found out about his betrayal."

Mateo walked into the library, holding a tablet. "Boss, updates from the border."

"Give it to me," Virgilio said.

"Cruz didn't even make it to the state line," Mateo said, a dark smirk on his face. "Morales got the decrypted bank files we leaked to his captains. They dragged Cruz into a garage in Juarez two hours ago. He won't be bothering anyone ever again."

Clara closed her eyes, a heavy shudder running through her frame. Another monster gone, swallowed by the very violence he had created.

"And Hector Morales?" Virgilio asked.

Mateo’s smile faded, replaced by cold professionalism. "He’s gone into hiding at his fortified ranch near Nogales. He’s calling in every favor, every corrupt federal officer, and every hired gun in the region. He knows his empire is collapsing. He wants a face-to-face sit-down."

Virgilio set his scotch glass down on the table with a soft *clink*.

"Where?"

"A neutral rail yard on the state border line. Tomorrow at midnight. He says he wants to negotiate terms for the surrender of the ledger and the girl."

Virgilio’s scarred eyebrow lifted. "He thinks he has leverage?"

"He has Diego Reyes," Mateo dropped the bomb.

Clara jumped to her feet, knocking her coffee cup sideways. The hot liquid spilled across the tray.

"My father?" she gasped, her hands shaking violently. "My father is alive?!"
