Chapter 17 - The Ambush in the Dark

We left the docks at 3:00 AM, speeding through the torrential rain back toward the sanctuary of our estate. Pendelton was secured in an unmarked federal transport vehicle escorted by two trusted marshals, heading directly to the United States Attorney’s office to enter protective custody before the morning hearing.
Everything was aligned. The audio evidence was pristine. The silicone casting fraud completely destroyed the validity of the Swiss contract. By dawn, Julian Vance would not only lose his petition—he would face an unsealed federal indictment for child trafficking and fraud.
My heart felt lighter for the first time in days. I gripped Marcus’s hand as he steered the truck through the winding country roads leading to our gates.
"We did it, Marcus," I breathed, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for months. "Noah is safe."
Marcus squeezed my hand, but his eyes never stopped scanning the dark tree line bordering the road. "It’s not over until the judge signs the dismissal and Vance is in cuffs, Clara. Keep your guard up."
As we approached the entrance of our property, Marcus slowed the vehicle. The heavy wrought-iron security gates, which were always magnetically sealed, were standing wide open.
The security lights on the stone pillars were shattered.
Marcus slammed on the brakes, throwing the vehicle into reverse. "The perimeter is breached."
Before the tires could grip the wet asphalt, a heavy commercial flatbed truck charged out of the blind curve behind us, smashing into our rear bumper with terrifying force!
The impact spun our SUV across the road, slamming us into the ditch beside the stone wall. The airbags deployed with a deafening boom, filling the cabin with white smoke and the smell of sulfur.
Dazed, blood trickling down my temple from the windshield impact, I heard Marcus groaning beside me. He cut his airbag away with his blade, reaching over to pull me free. "Clara! Clara, move! Out the driver's side, now!"

Through the shattered glass of the driver’s window, three men in tactical gear emerged from the shadows of the woods, their weapons raised.
And stepping calmly from behind the truck that had rammed us was Julian Vance himself.
