Chapter 13 - The Golden Shackle

The room spun. Blood rushed into my ears, deafening and hot.
"Biological asset?" I choked out, nausea rising violently in my throat. "Noah is *my* son! Lauren tried to murder him before he was even born! What lie is this?"
Marcus rewound the clip, pausing on Vance’s face. His eyes were narrowed into cold slits. "Julian Vance isn't just an investor. He runs Apex Global Therapeutics—a private biomedical conglomerate based in the Cayman Islands with branches in Geneva. They specialize in ultra-high-net-worth pediatric gene therapy and private surrogacy registries."
"What does that have to do with my baby?" I pleaded, tears of rage burning behind my eyelids.
"During the pregnancy," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a deadly, focused register, "when Lauren checked you into that private wing under heavy sedation before the emergency delivery, she didn't just try to swap the birth certificates. She had access to your bloodwork, your fetal tissue samples, and your signed intake consents."
"I never signed anything with Vance!"
"Lauren forged your signature on dozens of corporate documents to steal your trust fund," Marcus said, pulling up a secondary search terminal. "What if she didn't just forge financial transfers? What if she registered Noah into Vance’s global trust as a paid surrogate child under your name?"
Before I could process the horror of his words, the intercom at our front gate chimed again.
Marcus moved swiftly to the security monitors mounted near the wall. Three black SUVs were parked outside our electronic gates. Four men in dark suits stepped out, accompanied by an older woman carrying an official blue leather briefcase bearing the seal of the New York State Family Court.
Marcus zoomed the camera into the woman’s lapel badge.
"Process servers," Marcus muttered through gritted teeth. "And a court-appointed child advocate."
"On what grounds?" I yelled, terror clawing at my chest as I pulled Noah behind me into the corner of the kitchen. "Marcus, they can't take him! They have no right!"
"They aren't taking him today," Marcus said firmly, turning to look me dead in the eye, placing both hands on my shoulders with unshakeable strength. "Look at me, Clara. I am not letting anyone touch our boy. Do you hear me? Not Vance. Not Lauren. Not a single person on this earth."
His gaze anchored me, pulling me back from the brink of blinding panic.

"What do we do?" I whispered.
"We let them serve the papers," Marcus replied quietly, walking to the drawer and taking out his legal binder and his investigator’s recorder. "We make them show their cards. Then, we tear their game apart piece by bloody piece."
