Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The private salon of the Casino de Monte-Carlo was an enclave of whispers, crystal chandeliers, and astronomical stakes. Entry was restricted to members holding a minimum net worth of half a billion euros.

At the center of the room sat Arthur Sterling.

The seventy-year-old patriarch looked pristine, with swept-back silver hair, cold blue eyes, and an aristocratic posture that exuded absolute authority. He was surrounded by European banking titans and two private bodyguards. On the velvet table before him lay millions of euros in oversized VIP gaming plaques.

Gabriel and I entered arm-in-arm. The room fell into an immediate, electric hush.

Word of Adrian's arrest in New York had already crossed the Atlantic, but nobody expected the victorious heiress to appear on the Riviera, on the arm of the most formidable venture capitalist in North America.

Arthur looked up. His eyes turned to icy slits as he saw me approaching.

"Clara Hayes," Arthur said smoothly, his voice seasoned with years of ruthless diplomacy. "I must commend you. You handled my foolish son with remarkable efficiency. But coming here? Into my domain? That is hubris."

"Good evening, Arthur," I greeted, taking the empty chair directly across from him. Gabriel remained standing behind me, a silent, imposing guardian whose presence cast a chilling shadow over Arthur's security team. "I wouldn't miss your farewell tour for the world."

Arthur gave a cold, dry chuckle. "Farewell? My dear child, Adrian was a disposable pawn. Do you really think his arrest damages me? In two hours, my European accounts will be liquidated into untraceable bearer bonds. Sterling Maritime will be reborn under a new flag, and your father's legacy will remain an empty shell."

"Is that why you're transferring three point two billion euros through the Societe des Bains de Mer banking conduit right now?" I asked, tilting my head innocently.

Arthur’s smile vanished. "You have no proof of such transactions."

I opened my evening clutch, slid a gold-plated flash drive across the green felt, and rested my hand over it. "Your late partner, my father, had a master key to that cipher, Arthur. He embedded it in the maritime treaty ledger Adrian so foolishly tried to steal. Ten minutes ago, Gabriel’s financial team synchronized that cipher with the European Central Bank."

Arthur’s face drained of color. "You're bluffing."

"Check your phone, Arthur," Gabriel spoke up, his deep voice slicing through the silence of the salon. "The transfer was intercepted thirty seconds ago. The funds haven't vanished into bearer bonds. They’ve been redirected into the Hayes-Sterling Restitution Escrow account."

Arthur lunged for his secure tablet on the side table. As his trembling fingers tapped the screen, his composure completely shattered.

"No... no! This is impossible!" he roared, slamming the tablet onto the table. "You stole my life's work!"

May you like

"No, Arthur," I said, rising gracefully from my chair, looking down at him with sovereign disdain. "I simply foreclosed on your debt."
