Chapter 10 - Playing with Fire

The French gendarmes and Monegasque financial police entered the salon with swift, silent authority. Arthur Sterling, stripped of his dignity and his billions, was escorted out of the casino in front of the very oligarchs he had courted for decades.
As the commotion settled and the salon emptied, Gabriel and I walked out onto the grand terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. The cool night wind caught the hem of my dress, sending the emerald velvet swirling against Gabriel's legs.
"It’s over," I said, looking out at the endless horizon of the sea. "Adrian is in federal custody. Arthur will spend the rest of his life in a French prison. The Sterling empire belongs entirely to Hayes Maritime."
Gabriel stood beside me, turning to face me completely. The moonlight traced the sharp angles of his jaw, softening the dangerous intensity in his eyes.
"Not quite over," Gabriel said softly.
I looked at him, my brow furrowing slightly. "What do you mean?"
"The corporate war is over, Clara. But this..." He took a step closer, his hand gently taking mine, his fingers intertwining with mine. "This was never just about business for me."
My breath caught in my throat. "Gabriel..."
"The day your father introduced us, three years ago, I knew you were brilliant," he continued, his voice thick with a vulnerability I had never heard from him before. "When you agreed to marry Adrian, it took everything I had not to tear down his world with my bare hands. I stayed in the background, waiting, hoping you would see him for what he was. And when you finally decided to strike, I swore I would give you whatever armor you needed."
He reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of my face, his thumb tracing my cheekbone. The heat of his touch sent a jolt of pure electricity through my core.
"I don't want to be your business partner, Clara," Gabriel murmured, leaning in until his lips were inches from mine. "I want to be the man who stands beside you for the rest of your life."
Before I could speak, his lips met mine in a kiss that shattered every wall of defense I had built around my heart. It was fierce, passionate, and full of a promise that made the vastness of the ocean fade into insignificance.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't fighting for survival. I was surrendering to desire.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, I smiled through a breathless daze. "I think... I can accept that contract."
He laughed softly, pulling me into a fierce embrace against the sea breeze.

For a brief, shining moment, peace felt real. But peace in our world was always an illusion.
