Chapter 5 - The Midnight Call

The heavy wrought-iron gates of Hayes Manor creaked open into an unnatural stillness. The sprawling stone estate, nestled on thirty acres of manicured woodlands, had been the sanctuary of my childhood. But as Gabriel’s black Maybach swept up the serpentine driveway, the grand facade looked less like a fortress and more like a tomb.
The front door was slightly ajar.
Gabriel immediately drew a sleek, matte-black sidearm from beneath his jacket, his hand steady, his eyes scanning every shadowed corner of the grand foyer. "Stay behind me, Clara."
"I’m not hiding," I whispered, though adrenaline surged through my veins like ice water.
We stepped inside. The foyer was silent, except for the grandfather clock ticking methodically in the corner. We moved swiftly down the west wing toward my father’s private study—a cavernous room lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes and mahogany paneling.
The heavy oak door had been forced. Wood splinters littered the Persian rug.
Inside, the study had been torn apart with methodical precision. Books were ripped from the shelves, filing cabinets pried open, and the portrait of my late father tilted sideways, exposing the reinforced wall safe behind it.
The safe was wide open. And it was completely empty.
"What was in there?" Gabriel asked, inspecting the drill marks on the titanium lock. "This wasn't brute force. Whoever did this had the electronic bypass key."
"Adrian," I breathed, my fists clenching so hard my nails bit into my palms. "He spent months in this house during our engagement. He watched my father input the biometric codes before he died."
"What did he take, Clara?"
I turned toward the empty cavity, my voice trembling with controlled fury. "The Hayes Bloodline Trust deeds... and the handwritten ledger detailing the maritime treaties of 1998. The only documents that prove my father's legal immunity against the old European cartel allegations."
"Good lord," Gabriel muttered, piecing together the catastrophe instantly. "If Arthur Sterling leaks those documents stripped of their context, the federal authorities won't just freeze your assets—they’ll file criminal charges against the Hayes foundation. It would nullify your takeover of Sterling Holdings instantly."
Suddenly, the landline on the mahogany desk began to ring. The piercing sound echoed like a gunshot in the ransacked room.
Gabriel moved to intercept, but I held up a hand. "I’ll take it."
I walked over to the desk, lifted the heavy brass receiver, and pressed it to my ear.
"Looking for something, darling?" Adrian’s voice drawled through the line. He sounded manic, drunk on desperation and malice. Gone was the polished, seductive gentleman who had knelt in Paris to slip a diamond ring onto my finger.
"You broke into my home, Adrian," I said, keeping my voice chillingly level. "You’ve added burglary and grand larceny to your list of felony charges."
"Felony charges?" Adrian let out a wild, barking laugh. "You naive little girl. Do you think laws matter when you're playing for twenty billion dollars? My father and I have board members in three continents who answer to us. In four hours, the press will receive an anonymous package showing that your sainted father financed his shipping empire through black-market arms trafficking in Eastern Europe."
"You know that’s a forgery of context! My father acted as an undercover envoy for the maritime defense commission!"
"Who's going to believe you once the headlines hit?" Adrian sneered. "Unless, of course... you come to the docks at Pier 42. Alone. Bring the thumb drive containing the encrypted master keys to the board voting shares. You sign over Hayes Maritime to me, and I give you the documents back. You save your father's legacy, and I get what was supposed to be mine."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then by dawn tomorrow, Clara, Hayes Maritime will be confiscated by the federal government, and you will be in handcuffs. See you at midnight. Come alone, or the files go live instantly."
The click was sharp. I lowered the receiver, my heart hammering against my ribs, but my gaze had turned to pure diamond.
Gabriel looked at me, his jaw set in stone. "We call the FBI. We raid Pier 42."
May you like
"No," I replied, a cold smile breaking through the shadows of the room. "Adrian thinks I’m the cornered girl from yesterday morning. He thinks he’s hunting me. He has no idea he just walked straight into my crosshairs."
