Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

Thirty-six hours later, the Mediterranean breeze smelled of expensive perfume, sea salt, and old European power.

The Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo stood as an opulent monument to unfathomable wealth. From the balcony of my penthouse suite, the marina below was packed with mega-yachts, their lights shimmering on the indigo water like scattered diamonds.

I stood before the full-length mirror adjusting the neckline of a backless emerald-green velvet gown that hugged every curve of my body before cascading into a subtle train. Diamonds sparkled at my throat and ears—gifts from my father’s private collection, finally restored to the light.

A knock sounded at the double doors.

"Come in," I called out.

Gabriel entered, and for a fleeting moment, the unflappable billionaire stopped dead in his tracks. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and athletic frame, he looked breathtakingly dangerous.

"You look... extraordinary, Clara," he said, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes swept over me.

"A woman must dress for battle," I said, a playful smile touching my lips as I picked up my clutch. "Arthur Sterling is hosting the private VIP gala at the Casino de Monte-Carlo tonight. He believes he’s among his untouchable European allies."

Gabriel closed the distance between us, standing so close I could catch the intoxicating scent of cedarwood and amber radiating from his skin. "The French and Monegasque authorities have agreed to honor the Interpol red notice, but only if we provide proof that Arthur is transferring the funds through the casino’s private high-stakes credit lines tonight."

"Arthur always uses the baccarat tables to launder his black ledger transactions," I said, looking up into Gabriel's intense gaze. "My father documented the exact cipher. We don't just stop the transfer, Gabriel. We take the money back."

Gabriel reached out, his warm fingers lightly touching the curve of my jaw, lingering for a heartbeat longer than business required. His eyes held a depth that made my breath hitch. "After tonight, Clara... when the Sterling name is completely buried... what becomes of us?"

The question hung in the air, charged with unspoken longing and months of shared battles.

"First, we win," I whispered, my heart fluttering beneath the silk of my gown. "Then... we find out."

Gabriel smiled—a slow, devastating grin. "Then let’s go destroy an empire."
