Chapter 6 - Wolves in Silk Suits

Pier 42 was an industrial wasteland under the shroud of a fog-choked midnight. Abandoned shipping containers towered like rusty monoliths against the churning black water of the Hudson River. Rain began to fall, slicking the cracked asphalt as Gabriel’s car idled in the darkness half a mile away.
"You are not going in there without a tactical perimeter," Gabriel warned, his hand closing over mine on the armrest. His grip was warm, fierce, unyielding. "Adrian has nothing left to lose, Clara. A desperate man with his back against the wall is capable of anything."
"I’m wearing a wire, Gabriel, and your private security team is tracking my beacon," I reminded him, meeting his intense gaze. "If you go in with me, he’ll panic and destroy the ledger or trigger the digital leak. I have to draw him out into the open. I need him on recording confessing to the burglary and extortion."
Gabriel leaned in closer, his dark eyes ablaze with an emotion he could no longer conceal. "If he touches a single hair on your head, Clara, I won't wait for the law. I will end him."
"Trust me," I whispered.
I stepped out of the vehicle into the freezing drizzle, clutching a black leather briefcase containing dummy contracts and an encrypted dummy drive. My high heels clicked against the concrete as I marched toward Warehouse 9, the rusted structure where dim yellow light spilled through broken windowpanes.
I pushed open the heavy sliding metal door. The hinges shrieked in protest.
Inside, standing beside a battered metal desk illuminated by a single halogen work lamp, stood Adrian Sterling. Beside him were two hulking men in dark overcoats, their postures unmistakably military. In the corner, huddled on an overturned crate and shivering in a soaked trench coat, sat Vanessa. Her mascara was smeared, her face drawn and haggard.
"You actually came," Adrian said, stepping forward. He looked disheveled; his designer shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and dark circles bruised the skin under his bloodshot eyes. "I guess daddy’s spotless reputation was worth more than your corporate pride after all."
"Where are the documents, Adrian?" I demanded, stopping ten paces away.
"Show me the thumb drive first," he snapped, holding out a trembling hand. "Show me you signed the irrevocable share transfer!"
I unlatched the briefcase with deliberate slowness, revealing a thick stack of legal documents and the silver drive resting on top. "It's all here. Every share my father left me, reassigned to Sterling Holdings. But before I hand it over, I want the ledger."
Adrian chuckled, a sinister smirk creeping onto his face as he reached into his coat and produced my father’s leather-bound journal. "You really are pathetic, Clara. You thought you could defeat me in a boardroom? You’re just a spoiled little heiress who inherited a sandbox."
"Is that why you slept with my maid of honor?" I asked, tilting my head slightly toward Vanessa. "Because you were too cowardly to compete with me honestly?"
"You were cold! You were untouchable!" Vanessa suddenly yelled from the corner, jumping to her feet. "Adrian hated every second he had to pretend to love you! He loved me! We were going to run this city together while you sat home playing the dutiful trophy wife!"
"And look at where that got you, Vanessa," I said quietly, casting a pitying glance at her ruined designer shoes. "Freezing in an abandoned warehouse, facing ten to twenty years for corporate espionage."
"Shut up!" Adrian roared, pulling a revolver from his waistband and leveling it straight at my chest. "Sign the final addendum right now, Clara! On your knees! Sign it, or I shoot you right here, take your prints to sign it post-mortem, and dump your body in the river!"
My pulse spiked, but I didn't flinch. I kept my eyes locked on his twitching finger. "You won't shoot, Adrian. Because if you pull that trigger, the entire world gets to watch."
Adrian froze. "What?"

Above us, the high metal rafters suddenly ignited with blinding white floodlights, turning the gloom into an incandescent stage.
