Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past, Light of the Future

Though the crisis had passed and the empire of corruption had been dismantled, life at the Cross estate and the Minnie Foundation continued with a peaceful, joyful rhythm.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, Damon sat on the expansive back veranda with Dr. Sarah Vance, who had become a cornerstone of the foundation’s psychological recovery programs.
"You know, Damon," Sarah said, sipping her tea as they watched Minnie chase fireflies across the lawn with infectious laughter. "When you first brought her here, I didn't know if she would ever truly recover from the trauma of those docks. But look at her now."
"She survived because she never lost her spirit," Damon replied quietly, his gaze following Minnie as she caught a firefly in her cupped hands, admired it gently, and let it fly free back into the night. "I was the one who needed saving, Sarah. Not her."
"Don't sell yourself short," Sarah smiled warmly. "You tore down a corrupt system and built a sanctuary. The city hasn't stopped talking about it. In fact, the mayoral committee wants to honor you with the civic leadership award next month."
Damon scoffed lightly, shaking his head. "Awards are just vanity projects for people who want to feel important. The only award I care about is seeing Minnie grow up safe, educated, and loved."
"She certainly is that," Sarah agreed softly.
Just then, Minnie came running across the grass, her red shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone patio. She leaped into Damon’s lap, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.
"Mr. Damon, can we bake a cake tomorrow?" she whispered sleepily against his collarbone. "A really big one? With lots of strawberries?"
May you like
Damon wrapped his arms securely around her, resting his chin on her hair as he smiled into the twilight.
"The biggest cake in the city, Minnie," Damon promised. "And anyone is welcome to have a slice."
