Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Fortress

When Minnie woke up, she didn't find herself on a cold concrete floor or under a leaky tarp. She woke up in a room made of glass and warm oak, bathed in the soft, golden light of dawn. The bed was larger than her entire sleeping corner back at the docks, piled high with velvety pillows and a blanket softer than anything she had ever touched.

She sat up, clutching Damon’s oversized suit jacket around her shoulders, and rubbed her eyes.

"Good morning, Minnie."

She gasped, looking toward the balcony doors. Damon stood there holding a tray with warm milk, fresh pastries, and sliced fruit. He wore a simple black turtleneck and trousers, looking less like a ruthless corporate overlord and more like a gentle guardian.

"Where... where am I?" Minnie whispered, her voice still timid.

"You're in my home," Damon said, walking over and placing the tray gently across her lap. "And you are completely safe. No one will ever hurt you, yell at you, or make you go hungry again. I promise you that."

Minnie looked down at the food, then up at him. "Are you a king?"

Damon chuckled softly, a rare, genuine sound that seemed to chase away the last remnants of the cold night before. "No, Minnie. Just a man who forgot how to care about the right things until he saw you reaching for a slice of cake."

Before Minnie could reply, a gentle knock sounded at the door. Dr. Sarah Vance, a renowned pediatrician and child psychologist, entered with a warm, reassuring smile.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Dr. Sarah said softly, approaching the bed with a medical kit disguised as a cheerful yellow box. "I’m Sarah. I’m here to make sure you're healthy and strong. Would it be okay if I checked your temperature?"

Minnie nodded shyly. As Dr. Sarah began her gentle examination, Damon stepped out onto the private balcony, his phone vibrating instantly. It was the chief of police.

"Mr. Cross," the commissioner said grimly. "We raided the East Docks warehouse an hour ago. We found illegal labor documents, financial kickbacks linking Arthur Pendelton and Elisa Rochefort to Madame Vane’s trafficking ring, and ledger books detailing years of corruption."

"And Madame Vane?" Damon asked coldly.

"In custody, sir. Along with three of her associates. But... there's something else you need to know. We found records indicating Minnie wasn't an orphan. Her parents placed her in what they thought was a legitimate state-funded daycare program three years ago before... well, before they passed away. The foundation intercepted her and turned her over to Vane's syndicate."

Damon’s eyes darkened into a storm. "Tear the entire network down. I want every single asset frozen by noon. No bail. No plea deals."
