Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Rochefort

By noon, the financial world was in absolute pandemonium.
In her penthouse overlooking the city, Elisa Rochefort watched in horror as her husband, Richard Rochefort, burst through the double doors, his face pale and slick with sweat.
"It's over!" Richard screamed, throwing his designer tablet onto the glass coffee table. "Cross Capital just liquidated all our stock holdings! Our shipping lines are impounded, our bank accounts are frozen under federal anti-corruption laws, and the board has unanimously voted to strip me as CEO!"
"That's impossible!" Elisa shrieked, clutching her diamond necklace as if it could protect her. "Damon Cross is just one man! He can't destroy a dynasty over a filthy street brat!"
"He's not just one man, Elisa! He owns half the federal regulators and his legal team just released the wiretap recordings of your conversation with Arthur Pendelton last night!" Richard grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her in panic. "Your name is mud! Our friends aren't answering our calls. The gala committee just released a statement expelling you permanently from polite society!"
The front doorbell chimed. It wasn't polite; it was heavy, rhythmic, and demanding.
Before the butler could reach the foyer, the heavy oak doors were pushed open by federal marshals accompanied by two armed officers.

"Elisa Rochefort and Richard Rochefort," the lead marshal announced, holding up an arrest warrant. "You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, child exploitation conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."
As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Elisa’s wrists—the same wrists adorned with glittering diamonds the night before—she realized the terrifying truth: the world she had built on vanity, cruelty, and stolen charity had crumbled in less than twenty-four hours, all because she had yelled at a little girl who wanted a slice of cake.
