Chapter 8 - The Grand Opening

Six months later, the East Docks looked entirely different.

The rusted, decaying warehouses that had once housed illicit sweatshops and human misery had been completely demolished. In their place stood the state-of-the-art Minnie’s Hope Center—a sprawling, luminous campus featuring a modern school, a pediatric clinic, a creative arts studio, and safe, sunlit residential dormitories for children in need.

Today was the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The courtyard was filled with laughing children running across manicured green lawns, playing soccer, and eating fresh pastries from a dessert table twice as grand as the one at the infamous charity gala. But this time, every single child had a plate, and every single smile was real.

At the center of the stage stood Minnie, now six years old, wearing a crisp white dress and holding a pair of oversized ceremonial golden scissors. Next to her stood Damon, resting a gentle hand on her shoulder, alongside teachers, nurses, and community volunteers who had dedicated their lives to the children.

"Are you ready, Minnie?" Damon asked, smiling down at her.

Minnie nodded eagerly, her eyes shining with pride. "Ready!"

Together, they snipped the crimson ribbon. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and confetti that rained down like golden sunlight.

Among the crowd were former street kids who now had books, warm beds, and bright futures ahead of them. There were donors of genuine integrity who gave not for tax write-offs or social status, but out of a true desire to uplift their community.

As the music played and the children rushed to celebrate, Minnie tugged on Damon’s sleeve.

"Mr. Damon?" she asked softly.

"Yes, Minnie?"

"Will you stay here with us forever?"

May you like

Damon smiled, kneeling down just as he had on that rainy night in the garden months ago, looking into the eyes of the little girl who had changed his world forever.

"Forever isn't long enough, Minnie," Damon whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her braided hair. "I'm right here. Always."
