Chapter 9 - The Ghost Returns

“He’s heading for the basement server room,” Maya said instantly. “He’s going to trigger the manual halon fire-suppression override to fry the hard drives!”

“Not on my watch,” Grayson barked. He turned to his Master-at-Arms. “Secure the perimeter. Seal every exterior exit of this building. Nobody leaves without military clearance.”

“Admiral,” Maya said, strapping a tactical trauma kit to her belt. “The server vault requires a dual-key card emergency bypass from the trauma wing. I know the layout. Let me lead.”

Grayson looked at her for a second, seeing not a rookie nurse in scrubs, but the elite combat corpsman who had held the line in the scorched dirt of Afghanistan. “Lead the way, Master Chief.”

Maya sprinted toward the service elevators, the Admiral matching her stride. As the high-speed lift plunged down toward the hospital’s sub-basement levels, the low hum of industrial machinery filled the air.

Inside the quiet cage of the elevator, Grayson turned to Maya. The fury on his face had softened into something profound and painful.

“Thomas talked about you in his final audio recording,” Grayson said quietly as the floor indicator lights flashed downward: 6... 5... 4...

Maya’s breath caught in her chest. “Sir?”

“He said, ‘Dad, if you ever meet the corpsman who wouldn’t leave my side under the mortars... tell her she has the heart of a lion. Tell her not to let the war take her soul.’” Grayson touched Maya’s shoulder, his eyes shining with tears. “For four years, Maya, you blamed yourself for not saving him. You hid in this hospital, taking abuse from arrogant doctors, doing the quiet work because you thought you didn't deserve to hold a scalpel again.”

Maya looked down at her hands—the same hands that had held Thomas Grayson’s chest shut while shrapnel rained down from the ridgeline, the same hands that had drilled into little Chloe’s skull just hours ago.

“I couldn’t save your son, Admiral,” Maya whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the monitor flatlining on that MEDEVAC chopper.”

“You saved his daughter, Maya,” Grayson replied, his voice firm and unshakable. “You saved his bloodline. Thomas is looking down on you right now, and he is saluting you. Now let’s go finish his fight.”

DING.

The elevator doors slid open into the cold, concrete depths of the sub-basement.

The air down here smelled of burning ozone and electrical heat. Down the long, dimly lit corridor lined with high-voltage conduits, the red emergency strobe lights were flashing. A synthetic voice echoed over the basement PA system:

*WARNING: SERVER ROOM SUPPRESSION SYSTEM ARMED. HALON DISCHARGE IN THREE MINUTES. EVACUATE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY.*

“He’s already inside!” Maya yelled, breaking into a sprint.
