Chapter 22 - The Return to Life

Maya burst through the trauma pavilion doors like a hurricane, the insulated medical carrier in her hand.

The ICU bay looked like a combat zone: defibrillator pads strewn on the floor, empty medication vials rolling across the tiles, and flatline alarms ringing in agonizing dissonance. Miller’s chest was being violently compressed by a mechanical Lucas device, his skin grey and lifeless.

"Clear out!" Maya commanded, slapping the release on the cryo-case.

She cracked the first ampoule of Chiron, drawing the glowing blue antidote into a long spinal needle. Without waiting for local anesthesia, Maya stepped to Miller’s bedside, palpated the intervertebral space between L4 and L5, and drove the needle directly into the intrathecal space with surgical perfection.

"Intrathecal injection delivered," Maya announced, depressing the plunger. "Turn off the Lucas machine. Resume manual bagging."

For sixty seconds, the trauma bay held its breath. The only sound was the hiss of the ventilator.

Then, the monitor blipped.

A weak, erratic P-wave appeared. Then another. Within twenty seconds, the blue tint on Miller’s lips began to recede as normal capillary refill returned to his cheeks. His blood pressure surged to 110 over 70.

"He's back," the respiratory therapist whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Pulse is strong. SpO2 is climbing to ninety-eight percent."

Maya immediately turned to Hayes’s bed. She administered the second ampoule through his central line.

Within minutes, the brutal tremors ravaging Axe’s muscular frame subsided. His jaw relaxed, the lethal intracranial pressure plummeted into the normal green zone, and his breathing synchronized with the ventilator.

One by one, through the early hours of the morning, Maya treated every single one of the five poisoned SEALs. As the first rays of dawn broke across San Diego Bay, the continuous scream of death monitors was replaced by the steady, rhythmic beeping of five stabilized heartbeats.

Grayson stood in the corridor, looking through the glass at the young woman who had saved his granddaughter—and had now dragged five of the nation's most elite warriors back from the gates of hell.
