Chapter 20 - The Burning Vault

Maya plunged into the smoke-choked stairwell, her tactical flashlight beam cutting through swirls of blinding soot. The walls were already blistering with heat as internal thermite charges burned through fiber-optic cables and computer mainframes.
"Fire is spreading to the storage chambers!" Maya shouted through her respirator. "The cryo-freezers won't hold power for more than five minutes!"
At the end of the corridor, through a shattered observation window, Maya spotted the primary research bay. Surrounded by licking tongues of chemical fire stood a stainless steel cryo-containment tank bearing the stencil: **PROJECT CHIRON - AUTOLOGOUS NEUTRALIZER**.
Suddenly, the heavy blast door at the end of the hall shifted. A lone figure in full tactical combat gear emerged from the shadows, an automatic shotgun leveled directly at Maya's chest.
"Nobody leaves with the formula," the operative snarled through a voice scrambler. "The syndicate paid for scorched earth."
Before the mercenary could squeeze the trigger, a thunderous crack echoed through the concrete chamber. A 9mm slug punched through the side of his helmet. The operative collapsed to the floor like a puppet with cut strings.
Admiral Grayson stepped forward through the smoke, his service weapon smoking in his hand. "Rule number one in my Navy," the old SEAL growled. "Never threaten my corpsman."
"Move! The tank is venting!" Maya yelled.
She sprinted through the doorway, ignoring the superheated air searing her exposed skin. She grabbed the manual override wheel of the cryo-container, fighting against the screaming release valve. With a furious heave, Maya spun the valve counter-clockwise. The pressure vented with an icy cloud of liquid nitrogen, cooling the compartment just enough for her to unlatch the core tray.
Inside rested five vacuum-sealed glass ampoules containing a luminescent blue serum.
"Got them!" Maya cried, securing the ampoules into her shock-resistant medical carrier.

At that instant, a deafening explosion ripped through the support beams beneath their feet. The floor buckled violently, tilting at a twenty-degree angle as the cliffside foundation began sliding toward the raging sea below.
