Chapter 16 - The Cytokine Tempest

"Arrest! He's flatlining!" screamed the respiratory tech as Hayes's monitor erupted in a continuous, deafening alarm tone. The waveform collapsed from jagged spikes into an ominous, undulating sinusoidal rhythm—torsades de pointes.
Captain Vance barged into the bay, snatching the defibrillator paddles from the wall mount. "Clear the bed! Charging to two hundred joules!"
"No!" Maya shouted, lunging forward and slamming her palm against the defibrillator's emergency disarm button. "You shock that myocardium right now while the metabolic potassium is pooled inside the cardiac tissue, and you'll lock him into irreversible asystole!"
"You're committing murder!" Vance shrieked, face purple with rage. "Security! Get this lunatic out of my hospital!"
Two armed shore patrol officers reached for Maya’s shoulders, but a thunderous crash silenced the bay. Admiral Grayson stepped into the doorway, his sidearm unholstered and resting at low-ready.
"Touch her," Grayson said in a tone colder than the Arctic ice shelf, "and you face immediate court-martial for aiding a hostile chemical attack on United States personnel. Step back. Let Master Chief Reynolds work."
The room froze at the title: *Master Chief*.
Maya didn't glance up. Her hands moved with supernatural precision. She ripped open a central lumen line, jammed a multi-port manifold into the jugular sheath, and grabbed three vials of pralidoxime along with high-dose magnesium sulfate.
"Listen to me, Hayes," Maya whispered fiercely into the dying SEAL’s ear, pressing her thumb against his carotid sinus to mechanically dampen the catastrophic vagal surge. "You survived the Hindu Kush. You survived Fallujah. You do not die on a gurney from some corporate coward’s designer poison. Fight it, Axe. Hold the line!"
She slammed the magnesium bolus directly into the central line port.
For five agonizing seconds, the flatline drone continued. The silence in the trauma bay was suffocating. Outside the glass, the other four bays flickered as alarms echoed across the pavilion.
Then, with a shudder that rocked the entire bed frame, Hayes's chest heaved. A single spike appeared on the monitor. Then another. The chaotic sinus rhythm stabilized into a hard, rhythmic sinus bradycardia: 52 beats per minute.
"His ICP is dropping," the respiratory tech whispered, staring at the digital readout in utter awe. "38... 29... 18 mmHg. Brain swelling is halting."
Maya wiped the cold sweat from her forehead, turning her gaze directly toward Captain Vance. "One down. Four to go. But we have a critical problem."
"What problem?" Grayson asked, stepping to her side.

"The lipid binding only bought Axe six hours," Maya said, her breath ragged. "NPX-44 has a secondary cleavage phase. To eliminate it permanently from all five men, we need the raw neutralizing antidote compound. And that compound was manufactured exclusively in Vance’s private off-grid facility."
