Chapter 15 - The Red Line at Coronado

The Black Hawk touched down on the tarmac with a concussive shudder. Before the landing gear had fully settled, the side doors slid back, and Maya hit the tarmac running, Admiral Grayson flanking her like an armored dreadnought.
Armed Navy Master-at-Arms personnel cleared the perimeter as they burst through the double pneumatic blast doors of the base’s clandestine critical care pavilion. Inside, the corridor was pure chaos. Klaxons blared in three-second intervals, signifying multiple Code Blues across the intensive care pods.
"Who authorized civilian personnel into a secure Tier-1 facility?" boomed Captain Anthony Vance, the facility’s chief medical officer—and cousin to the disgraced pharma executive Maya had unmasked hours earlier. Captain Vance stood barricaded in front of Pod Alpha, his surgical gown splattered with crimson fluid. "Admiral Grayson, this is an active biological contamination zone. By order of Naval Medical Command, this unit is quarantined!"
"Stand down, Anthony," Grayson growled, stepping within inches of the Captain's face, his four-star shoulder boards gleaming under the fluorescent strips. "Your cousin is currently in federal custody facing treason and murder charges. And your patients have less than forty minutes before irreversible brain herniation."
"She’s a rookie nurse from a pediatric floor!" Captain Vance pointed a trembling, sweat-stained finger at Maya. "You're handing the survival of DEVGRU operators to a civilian orderly? Lieutenant Commander Hayes is in ventricular tachycardia! His brainstem is coning!"
Maya didn't waste a single breath arguing. She ducked beneath Captain Vance’s extended arm and kicked the pressure seal on Pod Alpha's bay door.
The scene inside was horrific. Hayes, a mountain of a man covered in trident tattoos, was thrashing against soft restraints, his face cyanotic, foam boiling from his lips, his arterial monitor screaming at 210 over 130. Three junior flight surgeons were frantically attempting to insert an intracranial bolt while another prepared a massive push of epinephrine.
"Hold that syringe!" Maya roared. The sheer command in her voice froze the trauma room. "If you push epinephrine into an NPX-44 hyper-adrenergic surge, his heart will rupture against the pericardium!"
The junior surgeon hesitated, looking from Maya's pink scrubs to her lethal eyes.
"Who the hell are you?" the young doctor stammered.

"I’m the corpsman who kept fifty men breathing through the Arghandab valley when your medevac birds were grounded," Maya said, tearing a central line kit from the sterile trolley. "Cut the pressors. Hang two grams of calcium gluconate and prepare twenty-percent Intralipid. We are flushing the neurotoxin out of his cellular membranes before his brain cooks in its own skull."
