Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Six months passed.
Elena became chairman of the DeMarco family trust.
She transformed the company.
She removed corrupt executives.
She created employee protections.
She sold several properties connected to illegal operations.
She gave a portion of the trust to charities in her mother's name.
Lorenzo changed too.
He stopped using fear as leadership.
He moved away from the old criminal network.
He turned several DeMarco businesses legitimate.
He even testified against former associates.
People called him weak.
He didn't care.
One rainy evening, Elena found him standing outside her mother's old house.
“You knew I would be here?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
They stood beneath the porch.
Lorenzo looked different.
Less dangerous.
More human.
“I have something for you.”
He handed her a small box.
Elena opened it.
Inside was her engagement ring.
She stared.
“I thought you sold it.”
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because it belongs to you.”
He closed the box.
“You can keep it, throw it away, or give it to someone else.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“You're not proposing.”
“No.”
“Good.”
He laughed.
“I learned.”
Rain tapped against the roof.
Elena looked at him.
“Lorenzo.”
“Yes?”
“I loved you.”
His face tightened.
“And?”
“And I still do.”
He stopped breathing.
“But I don't want the old relationship.”
“Neither do I.”
“I don't want to be your possession.”
“You won't be.”
“I don't want your protection.”
“You'll have my respect.”
“I don't want promises.”
“I'll give you actions.”
Elena smiled.
“Then start there.”
He nodded.
They didn't kiss.
Not that night.
Instead, Lorenzo asked,
“Dinner?”
Elena pretended to think.
“Somewhere normal.”
“I know a place.”
“Not one of your restaurants.”
“I know a place.”
“Cheap?”
“Terrible.”
She laughed.
“Then let's go.”
For the first time, they walked side by side.
Not as mafia heir and bride.
May you like
Not as billionaire and beneficiary.
Just two people choosing to start over.
