Chapter 4 - THE TRUST

The following morning, the DeMarco board convened.
Nobody slept.
News had spread through Chicago before sunrise.
The canceled wedding had become a scandal.
But the trust documents were something else.
They could destroy the entire family's legal structure.
Lorenzo sat at the head of the table.
Elena sat across from him.
Not beside him.
That mattered.
His lawyer opened the original trust documents.
“The beneficiary is Isabella Hart.”
Elena looked at him.
“And after her death?”
The lawyer swallowed.
“You.”
Celeste's attorney objected.
“This document was superseded.”
Salvatore laughed quietly.
“No.”
He placed a second file on the table.
“The superseding document was forged.”
The lawyer opened it.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“From the archive beneath the old DeMarco warehouse.”
Lorenzo looked at Salvatore.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your father ordered me to wait until Elena was safe.”
Elena frowned.
“Safe from whom?”
Salvatore looked at Lorenzo.
“Your uncle Adrian wasn't killed because of business.”
“Then why?”
“Because he discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
Salvatore placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Celeste standing beside Adrian.
Years before she married into the family.
Adrian was holding a newborn baby.
Elena stared.
“That baby is me.”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo leaned forward.
“What was Celeste doing there?”
Salvatore answered.
“She was Adrian's assistant.”
Elena looked at Celeste.
“You knew my father.”
Celeste remained silent.
Then she whispered,
“He was supposed to marry me.”
The room froze.
“What?”
Celeste looked at Elena.
“Your mother stole him.”
Elena stared in disbelief.
“That is why you hated her?”
Celeste's expression twisted.
“She destroyed my life.”
“No,” Elena said.
“You destroyed your own life.”
For the first time, Celeste looked genuinely broken.
But Elena wasn't finished.
“You didn't just want revenge.”
She pointed to the trust.
“You wanted this.”
The lawyer nodded.
“If Elena legally accepts the trust, she becomes the controlling beneficiary of several properties, investment accounts, and voting shares.”
Lorenzo looked at Elena.
“Which means?”
“You control nearly forty percent of DeMarco Holdings.”
Everyone became silent.
Elena hadn't known.
Neither had Lorenzo.
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Mother…”
Celeste looked at her.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand everything now.”
Vanessa turned toward Elena.
“I am sorry.”
Elena studied her.
“Are you?”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice remained calm.
“You wore my dress because you wanted my life.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.”
“You helped them remove me.”
“I was scared.”
“You were jealous.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Elena nodded.
“That is the first honest thing you've done.”
The meeting ended with Celeste being escorted away.
But the story wasn't over.
That evening, Lorenzo came to Elena's new apartment.
He stood outside the door for several minutes before knocking.
Elena opened it.
Neither spoke.
Finally he said,
“I know you don't owe me anything.”
She nodded.
“I don't.”
“I should have defended you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have seen what they were doing.”
“Yes.”
“I should have believed you.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“I loved you.”
Elena looked at him.
“You loved the woman you thought I was.”
“No.”
“You didn't know me.”
He looked down.
“I want to.”
Elena's heart hurt.
Because that was the first thing he had said that didn't sound like an excuse.
“I don't know if I can forgive you.”
“You don't have to.”
He turned to leave.
“Elena?”
She stopped him.
He looked back.
She held out his father's letter.
“You should read the last page.”
He took it.
His father had written:
If Elena ever leaves you, do not chase her.
Ask yourself what you did that made her believe she had to.
Lorenzo's eyes filled.
He looked at Elena.
“I understand now.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Then she closed the door.
May you like
For the first time, Lorenzo did not chase her.
And somehow, that was the beginning of hope.
