Chapter 6 - THE FATHER IN THE SHADOWS
Adrian explained everything.
After the accident, he had been badly injured.
Celeste believed he was dead.
Vittorio secretly moved him to Europe.
He stayed there under another identity.
He watched Elena grow from a distance.
He attended her school events from across streets.
He saw her graduate.
He watched her meet Lorenzo.
And he watched Celeste move closer to her.
“I wanted to come back,” Adrian said.
“Why didn't you?”
“Because every time I tried, someone disappeared.”
Elena frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Witnesses.”
People who knew the truth had vanished.
One by one.
Adrian believed the DeMarco organization had been infiltrated.
Not by Celeste alone.
Someone else had been working behind her.
Elena asked,
“Who?”
Adrian looked at Lorenzo.
“Your father's oldest business partner.”
Lorenzo's face hardened.
“Richard Moretti.”
Adrian nodded.
Richard Moretti had spent decades pretending to be loyal.
But he had quietly moved money out of DeMarco Holdings.
He had helped Celeste forge documents.
And he had arranged for Vanessa to receive access to the wedding inventory.
Lorenzo stood.
“I'll handle him.”
Adrian stopped him.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that's exactly what he wants.”
Lorenzo looked confused.
“He wants you angry.”
Elena understood.
“He wants Lorenzo to react emotionally so he can claim Lorenzo is unstable.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then take control of the board.”
Elena looked at Lorenzo.
Together, they created a plan.
Not revenge.
Justice.
They collected bank records.
Security footage.
Voice recordings.
Forged documents.
Witness statements.
For six weeks, they built the case.
Richard never realized.
He believed Elena was distracted by her father's return.
He believed Lorenzo was emotionally broken.
He believed Celeste had taken the fall for everyone.
Then the board meeting arrived.
Richard walked in smiling.
“I'm glad we've finally returned to business.”
Elena stood.
“Sit down.”
Richard laughed.
“You don't speak to me like that.”
She placed a folder on the table.
“Then maybe this will help.”
His smile disappeared.
Inside were twenty-seven transfers.
All signed electronically through an account controlled by Richard.
Lorenzo placed another folder down.
“Forgery reports.”
Adrian placed a third.
“Witness testimony.”
Richard looked around.
“This is fabricated.”
Elena pressed play.
His own voice filled the room.
He was speaking to Celeste.
“If Elena disappears, Lorenzo will marry Vanessa.”
Richard's face turned white.
Then another recording played.
Richard said:
“Once the trust is transferred, we control the company.”
Silence.
Lorenzo leaned back.
“You made one mistake.”
Richard stared at him.
“What?”
“You assumed Elena would stay silent.”
Richard looked at Elena.
She smiled.
“No.”

“I assumed I had already lost everything.”
And that made me impossible to control.
