Chapter 3 - THE BRIDE WHO NEVER CAME BACK

By seven that evening, the DeMarco estate was packed.
Guests stood beneath white orchids.
Cameras waited.
Champagne flowed.
But the altar remained empty.
Lorenzo stood alone.
He wore the tuxedo Elena had chosen.
His hands were clasped behind his back.
The priest approached him quietly.
“Mr. DeMarco, perhaps we should postpone.”
“No.”
Lorenzo looked toward the entrance.
“She is coming.”
Celeste approached.
“Lorenzo.”
He turned.
“Where is Vanessa?”
Celeste's expression flickered.
“She went upstairs.”
“Why?”
“She isn't feeling well.”
Lorenzo smiled without warmth.
“Bring her here.”
“Lorenzo—”
“Now.”
Five minutes later Vanessa appeared.
She wore a different dress.
Not Elena's.
But it was white.
Very white.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Why are you wearing white?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I thought…”
“You thought what?”
Celeste stepped forward.
“She didn't mean anything by it.”
Lorenzo ignored her.
“Did Elena know about the dress?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Answer me.”
“No.”
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
“Did you know she was leaving?”
Vanessa looked at Celeste.
That was enough.
Lorenzo understood.
He turned toward the guests.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the wedding is canceled.”
Shock moved through the ballroom.
Celeste grabbed his arm.
“You cannot do this.”
Lorenzo removed her hand.
“Why?”
“Think about the family.”
“I am.”
He looked at Vanessa.
Then Celeste.
Then the three hundred people watching.
“My fiancée disappeared this morning.”
A murmur spread.
“And apparently several members of my family knew she was going to disappear.”
Celeste went pale.
“That is ridiculous.”
Lorenzo raised his phone.
“I have proof.”
Vanessa's face changed.
She whispered,
“Mother…”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Don't call her that.”
Vanessa froze.
“She has been lying to me too.”
The ballroom fell silent.
Lorenzo turned to Marco.
“Play it.”
The recording filled the room.
Celeste's voice.
Vanessa's voice.
Their plan.
Their discussion of Elena.
Their intention to manipulate Lorenzo into marrying Vanessa.
The guests stared.
Someone dropped a glass.
Celeste screamed,
“That's fabricated!”
Marco stepped forward.
“It came directly from the bridal suite security system.”
Celeste looked at Lorenzo.
“You would believe her over your family?”
Lorenzo answered quietly.
“She was my family.”
Celeste stared.
“You are throwing away everything for that woman?”
“No.”
Lorenzo looked toward the empty altar.
“I'm throwing away everything because of what you did to her.”
Then a new voice came from the ballroom entrance.
“That's not everything.”
Everyone turned.
A man in a dark coat walked inside.
Salvatore Bellini.
The older guests recognized him immediately.
Whispers exploded.
“He's alive.”
“Impossible.”
“Bellini?”
Lorenzo stared.
“You.”
Salvatore walked forward.
“I have something your father left for you.”
He handed Lorenzo a sealed envelope.
Lorenzo opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His father's handwriting.
Lorenzo read it silently.
His face changed.
Then he looked at Celeste.
“You killed my uncle.”
Celeste's lips parted.
“No.”
“You forged the trust.”
“No.”
“You lied about Elena's mother.”
Celeste stepped backward.
Lorenzo continued.
“And you have spent twenty years teaching me to hate the wrong woman.”
Celeste shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Lorenzo, I didn't know.”
He looked at her.
“You knew enough.”
She collapsed into a chair.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
A woman entered.
Elena.
The entire room stopped breathing.
She wasn't wearing white.
She wasn't wearing jewelry.
She wore simple cream trousers and a sweater.
She looked calm.
Lorenzo couldn't move.
“Elena…”
She looked at him.
There was pain in her eyes.
But there was no fear.
“I came back for one reason.”
He stepped toward her.
She raised her hand.
He stopped.
“I didn't come back to become your bride.”
Lorenzo's face fell.
“I came back so everyone could hear the truth.”
She turned toward the guests.
“My name is Elena Hart.”
She held up the birth certificate.
“And I am the rightful beneficiary of the DeMarco family trust.”
The ballroom erupted.
Celeste screamed.
Vanessa stood.
Lorenzo stared at Elena.
And then Elena said the words that destroyed the last lie.

“My mother never stole from the DeMarcos.”
“She was the one who saved them.”
